After delving into the world of different programming languages, I found myself amazed and scared at the amount of different programming languages available and their followers who swear that they're the best.

I'm currently learning C++, tried a bit of python one night and hated it but I think that's because I don't know enough programming syntax and usage in general.

So, what's your favourite language and why? I'll include a poll with the ones that pop into my head.

Japanese, with my second favourite being German.

Well...
Actually, my favourite is C++, but this semester I had to use Matlab which uses a bastard son of C, and next semester I'm going to learn Assembly. Next year, however, I'll be doing some C.

I started with C and then moved onto C++. I think C is a good place to start because a lot of modern programming languages are strongly inspired by it.

nah, C is a good place to start because you actually have to care about the underlying data structures.

I only ever use C++ and C#.

I haven't programmed in a while and forgot most of it.

If you aren't kidding: Not a programming language and has almost nothing in common with one.

If you are kidding: haha

I use Java because that's what my school teaches and Python because it's fun as shit to use. If I want to do something somewhat practical usually shell scripting is the way to go.

I'm most familiar with Java but I'm currently learning C++ and can tell it'll become my default PL... just very frustrating at this point.

What do you fine gentlemen actually use programming for?

I had to learn it for university, but I've never had an opportunity to use it beyond coursework. I know this is a noob question but the only thing I can think of doing with it is writing flash games. Everything else is a mystery to me.

Studied Python last year, this year it's C++.
I am useless at programming, but so far I prefer C++. It just feels more useful.

Making games without Flash. I've dabbled in Actionscript, but once you get into 3D you have to switch to either writing your own engine, using a library like XNA (c#), or using a pre-made engine like Unity (Javascript or c#) or UDK (unrealscript, bleeergh). Java's great for cross-platform and web development, though it's slow as balls.

I use C# primarily, for both XNA and Unity development, though I've been meaning to get into a lower-level language like C++, just because you learn a lot more about how programming languages work that way. C# is just sooo comfortable to use, though.

Wow...how did you forget SQL on that poll?...

I mean, really, databases (which all use SQL) are only what make just about everything run. You get on a website, chances are, it may use a database.

The best totally depends on the situation. If I am building something on android I would use nothing else but java, if I want to do some stuff in linux I always use c/c++ because that's what almost everything is built in. If I wanted to design websites i would use ruby and html. See where this is going? There is no best language, even though c is always fun to program in.

I really like C# too, it's what Java would've been if it was good (half troll)

sql is a query language (obviously) so i don't think it really fits with the rest of these programming languages. as far as the poll goes anyway.

corey: i highly recommend taking a stab at writing your own 3D engine. it's frustrating and rewarding at the same time. even if you never use it, the experience will teach you so much. i did this with C and OpenGL. you could use DirectX if you wanted to, but OpenGL is cross platform. i don't suggest using any language but C or C++, and i particuarly recommend C.

The only language I really know is Java, so I have to go with that. And seeing how most object oriented languages are incredibly similar, I could also mark the C languages. There are still some important differences, though.

Java is also very much a cross platform language. Your smartphone? Probably programmed with Java. Your PC? Has some Java. Your Mac? Same as your PC. Etc.? HAS JAVA. By extension, languages like C also are somewhat cross platform. I gotta say, Object Oriented is one of the better programming concepts out there.

I'm considering writing my own 2D engine for my bachelor project, but 3D is just too much work for me right now. In my experience all commercial engines are in C++, why would you recommend C?

Programmers can't live without Java.

I mean, where else would they get their much-needed caffeine from?
