so here i am with my middle and third fingers broken on my right hand. strumming and fingerpicking are out of the question for a while.
i know there's no substitute for "trigger-time" but is there anything i can do until i can play again? short of reading a whole bunch of stuff that makes no sense to me withoout the immediate application. any help would be appreciated, even though i can't play at the moment, i don't want to get too far away from playing.

Use the brace on your fingers to make slide-like sounds? Practice hammer ons and pull offs?

Actually, since your left is still functional, you could still learn & practice new/difficult chords...essentially hammering them on.

And when you have your right hand back, use those new chords to write a song, "Idle hands are the devil's playground" perhaps?

hmm...slam my broken fingers against my guitar...i'll get back to you on that. its bad enough that i cant masterbate...err i mean.. make omelets.. and now i have to be nice the the "blonde".
catchy tune. tricky to get a good rhythm for though. i'll work on it.

Not slam...rub...and that, if and only if you have one of those metal braces on the fingers.

I got some almost synthesizer type sounds out of rhythmically rubbing a stone pick along the strings. Ditto a slide.

Search around for songs that you might like to learn, after you recover... you can listen to a lot of stuff on You Tube, and it's enjoyable and should help to pass the time.

Sorry to hear about your injury.

wow, really sorry to hear that. why not start off by watching a bunch of the trailers over at http://www.homespuntapes.com/ ? lots of partial lessons there, or you could always buy a couple of the DVDs. i also like to watch youtube videos about guitar manufacturers and luthiers to keep me in the loop when i can't play.

you could also get an inexpensive lap harp or a keyboard and practice playing one-handed. i did that when i had problems with one hand, and it did keep me playing.

best wishes for a fast recovery!

I just looked in my Oxford English Dictionary and under "Acoustic Guitar", there was your Avatar and an email address!

the nanomag pickup on my epi les paul ultra III gives a reasonable acoustic sound and is easier to play as i only have to basically just touch the strings. previously looped backtracks on my laptop and my thumb are passable for a bit but the up and down motion makes my hand throb after a short time. i think i'll work on patti's suggestion for a bit.

Just go buy yourself a tin whistle. Here I'll give you a hand. Cheers

you could also practice on stuff you don't know using only your fretting hand.

Well, I don't know if I could "make an omelet" if I broke my left hand, but I'd be willing to "give it a shot" with my right, so to speak.....

that one cranky, i opened up for so much fun but, you are the only one brave enough to jump in and "gimme a hand"!

I prefer not to think of the whole issue in euphemisms such as "omelet", or, "lending a hand". But, I rather think of it in more patriotic terms. If you can't help a little fallen soldier back up to stand proudly at attention and salute once again, any way you can, then you're just not doing your best.....

And who knows, he just might make you an omelet in return, out of sense of duty, and gratitude....

(Etc.)

Of all the euphemisms I know for that, the one I utter the most is "roughing up the suspect- and his two known associates- until they spill their guts."

Clever indeed.....

But, I fear that it takes an activity which is both noble and celebratory, and reduces it to a common, vulgar, and tawdry, civil rights violation........

Perhaps, but a good Catholic boy would also both take solace in, and embrace the fact, that admission absolves guilt.

Either that, or possibly the conquistadores, slew thousands of Aztecs while spreading the word of, "El Salvadore", due to the fact they were sexually repressed....

Perhaps one, (or both), of you is simply wearing the wrong hat:

Besides, what it's supposed to do is make you go blind, and we both know that's not gonna happen.

1) you have to be genuinely contrite to receive absolution

2) my eyes are VERY bad

3) one euphemism I learned in Catholic HS was "beating the Bishop"...
