Hey guys

Since it was my birthday last week, I decided to treat myself to an early birthday present. Except it arrived late so I ended up getting it after the fact...

Still, I was super excited when this thing arrived at my door a few days ago:

I was looking for a smaller tube combo to dink around with since I've been without an amp for a while and I ended up looking into the Fender Excelsior. Needless to say, I fell in love with it pretty quick since it's tone is right up my alley (I mostly play tired old-man blues LOL). It doesn't look half bad either if you're into that retro vibe.

I wasn't really expecting much considering the price range (sub 400 dollar amp) but this thing rips a righteous rock and roll, that's for sure. The cleans are nice and crisp, even with humbuckers. I wasn't so much a fan of the dark setting when the amp is set clean but I find it takes dirtboxes better. Keep in mind, I'm not a huge Fender guy (the only other Fender I've owned was a Hot Rod Deluxe) so I'm not the best gauge for nice clean tones. They sound really nice to my ears though. Really shimmery with the tremolo effect.

Now on to the dirt... Very classic, rock and roll sound pumping out of this thing. The speakers aren't even broken in yet but I'm still getting some sweet grind. It's got a really nice honky mid-range too! The bright setting sounds like it has more gain to my ears. You wouldn't be able to coax much more gain than something like Free or Zeppelin though so don't expect anything crazy. The amp responds really well when you're playing around with your guitar's volume pot. You can crank the amp up all the way and still get a usable clean tone.

The tremolo sounds cool. Although it's pretty subtle even when you turn it up. I'm sure most people would rather it come with reverb but I was never much of a reverb man anyway. Having basically a free modulation pedal built in is an added bonus for me

Anywho, enough of the boring writing stuff... On to the clips!

Dual humbucker guitar -> Excelsior (cranked on the bright setting/stock china tubes).

With a name that reminds me of a Children of Bodom album.

Not sure if you're actually serious.

HNAD tho. It sounds nice.

The name is from a CoB album. I used to play metal when I first joined the site.

Yes I'm serious. Did you hear any Bodom in the clip?

Thanks man! It's appreciated.

They're pretty sweet. Although I've been reading a lot of people have been having issues with noise and rattle. I got lucky and don't have any problems like that with mine (yet).

Thanks!

No problem. You just gotta post a clip, you know? You don't look at an amp, you listen to it.

I saw in a couple of pictures that on Bucketheads Les Paul (only some pictures) that his neck pickup is painted in white. Can anyone explain to me why he would do this, and if there are any pros and cons.

Yeah, no rattle so far. I've been pushing the bastard pretty hard too.

Thanks. I'm a bit out of practice, but I get by.

yeah mine rattled at anything much above 2-3 on the volume control (that's numbers, not o'clock). considering how many reports i'd heard of rattling i didn't want to chance a replacement in case it was just as bad, lol.

Also what flavor of LP is that?
Sick tone, HNAD!

Thanks.

It's a gladiator LP. Flame maple top, 2 piece mahogany back and a one piece neck. Also fret edge binding.

*stoner voice* Daaamn man, That amp, it sounds.....so...... give me a moment, I'm so high off of that tone right now, it's not even funny.

*Ahem*

*normal voice* HNAD man You got yourself a pretty damn good amp. The tone is amazing. May I inquire what guitar and dirty pedal your using in this video?

actually- had i not had a run of bad luck I'd have probably chanced a replacement. But i'd been parcelling up so many darn things to return I got sick of it.

I'm kind of curious as to what causes the rattle in these things. Probably just loose screws and stuff?

No dirtbox in the video. That's just amp and guitar. The guitar is a Gladiator Les Paul.

Anywho, I decided to do a clip with a distortion pedal if anybody was curious about how they sound. I changed the settings a bit (Lower volume, on the dark setting now and plugged into the accordion input). Same guitar.

it can be a number of things... there's a thread on tgp where some people ripped the thing apart and put it together again (with padding and stuff like that), which seemed to work. some other people got lucky and the rattle stopped when the preamp valves were changed. that actually fixed mine, but the tremolo was dodgy too so i had to send it back... the tremolo worked when it returned but then it rattled nomatter what preamp tubes i had in there. at that point i figured i'd cut my losses EDIT: nice new clip. i thought it took pedals pretty well.

I see. Hopefully it doesn't rattle if I decide to get better tubes. I'd be pretty gutted if I was stuck with the Chinese ones.

Haven't had any problems with my tremolo yet. What happened with yours? I'm guessing it was cutting out and stuff?

Thanks. It's not a bad sound but I should definitely use something better than a FAB distortion next time.

^ yeah it'd be worth trying different tubes- there was nothing obviously wrong with my tremolo with the stock tubes, but then when i put in different preamp tubes there was just no tremolo.

rattle shouldn't be a worry with the new tubes i don't think (unless they're microphonic i guess, but then you could just get different non-microphonic ones).

lol about the pedal. some cheap pedals can be pretty nice. a lot are clones of dearer pedals now

Yeah, I wouldn't mind picking up one of those JOYO Sweet Honey clones. It'll complete my Chinese rig of doom

I'll probably keep the amp for a bit and see if it lasts. If I don't run into any problems, I'll probably consider upgrading the speakers and getting some nicer tubes

yeah the sweet baby seems quite nice (though i haven't tried the original). suffers slightly from "that sounds really nice, now what can i use it for?" syndrome, lol, but it is a nice od pedal and if a ts is too midhumpy or smooth or light on the bass but a timmy or bluesbreaker or something like that is too transparent then it might be worth a try. kinda reminds me of a treblier/edgier ocd (or more accurately a brighter joyo ultimate drive, as i haven't tried the original).

for the £17 or whatever silly price i paid for mine from marcmart in china it's hard to go wrong, lol.

EDIT: i can't remember if i tried it with the excelsior, though i don't see why it wouldn't work. Most of my time with the excelsior was spent troubleshooting

I probably remember the pedal differently but I thought it had kind of a Marshallesque flavor no? Seemed like something I could use as a standalone unit or a boost depending on the situation.

I might have to keep looking

^ yeah possibly a bit. Much more so than a tubescreamer, anyway. and that focus control almost turns it from a smooth od into an edgier distortion (in terms of tone, anyway), so depending on where you have it set will affect how it sounds. I'd say more of a vintage marshally type of thing, though. i don't think you'd do hotrodded 800 tones with it, lol. and if you wanted early van halen tones the hot plexi would be better (though can be very bright).

don't get me wrong, it's a nice pedal (the sweet baby). Plus i don't tend to tweak much so i probably didn't give it as much of a try as i should, lol.

Sounds perfect for me. Van Halen is almost too much gain for my tastes these days so I'd rather something JTM or even early plexi-ish in terms of gain.

Also, the Excelsior loves old Crybaby pedals. I'm having a blast with this thing
