This band from the 70's had a concept album about a troll and they use very folky and classical instruments.

I really can't remember much about that band, but I don't think they released much material.

Nah, that's not them. Although, I have recently gotten heavily into GG.

The music was very traditional in that it didn't really have a drum kit and most of the instruments were acoustic.
The band had a female singer (iirc).

Sounds a bit like Renaissance - Scheherazade and other stories. I'm not sure about the troll though.
