So, I enjoy bands like Karnivool and the Mars Volta (except their last album). I also enjoy quite a bit of prog metal. Noise rock is also cool, if well done. I'm looking for more modern prog rock bands though.

Suggestions?

Some argue for Coheed and Cambria.

My knowledge on prog is actually rather limited.

Here's a cool band that never got the attention they deserved. If you like CC and Karnivool then I imagine you'll enjoy them.

The Party Of Helicopters

3 is also good.

Actually, here's a list of other bands.

Pineapple Thief
Porcupine Tree
Riverside
Divinity Destroyed(Eden In Ashes <3)
Dominia
At The Drive-In('Cause they're awesome and have members of the Mars Volta)
Lower Definition
Hot Cross

I'm not much of a fan of Riverside, but they always struck me as a band that a lot of Prog-heads would enjoy.

Diablo Swing Orchestra may interest you as well. Generally they're considered to be avantgarde, but honestly they sound nothing like any avantgarde group I've ever heard. For lack of a better genre I'd call it Theatrical progessive metal.

Other than that... Pretty much any project Steven Wilson of Porcupine Tree has been a part of.

The more recent Anathema albums, Weather Systems particularly, are amazing. They've made quite the transition from where they started in the more metal territory.

Also, OP, Pain of Salvation and Shadowlight.

You could maybe describe the new DEP single as prog?

You might dig Dead Letter Circus too:

Wow, it's gonna take me forever to go through this list...

Although, I will say that Riverside and Porcupine Tree aren't my thing.

As for the rest, any albums rec's?

I have none for the one's I've posted I'm afraid. Either go onto Last.Fm see what the popular consensus is or hop on youtube/spotify and see what you like.

I ain't got nuffin to do today, so I'm going to give you a nice list. :3

Old Progressive Rock:

Camel - Moonmadeness
King Crimson - Red/In The Court Of The Crimson King/Starless And Bible Black
Genesis - Trespass/Nursery Cryme/The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway
Van Der Graaf Generator - The Least We Can Do Is Wave To Each Other
Jethro Tull - A Passion Play/Minstrel In The Gallery
Caravan - In The Land Of Grey And Pink
Emerson Lake And Palmer - Tarkus/ELP/Trilogy
Yes - Fragile/The Yes Album/Closer To The Edge
Banco Del Mutuo Soccoroso - Darwin!
Nektar - Remember The Future

Modern Progressive Rock:

Diagonal - Diagonal
Astra - The Weirding/The Black Chord
O.S.I. - Free
Pineapple Thief - Variations On A Dream
Green Carnation - Light Of Day, Day Of Darkness/Acoustic Verses
Three - The End Is Begun
The Party Of Helicopters - Whatever you can find by them
Kaipa - Angling Feelings

More "traditional" Progressive Metal:

Anacrusis - Screams And Whispers/Manic Impressions
Dominia - Divine Revolution
Divinity Destroyed - Eden In Ashes
Disillusion - Back To Times Of Splendor
Phlebotomized - Immense Intense Suspense
Atheist - Unquestionable Presence
Ayreon - The Human Equation/The one with binary as the title
Cynic - Focus
Edge Of Sanity - Crimson/Crimson II
Ethereal Blue - Essays In Rhyme On Passion And Ethics
Gordian Knot(Not exactly Metal) - Emergent
Into Eternity - Scattering The Ashes/The Incurable Tragedy
Pain Of Salvation - Entropia/The Perfect Element/One Hour By The Concrete Lake
Sculptured - Embodiment
While Heaven Wept - Vast Oceans Lachrymose
Silencer - Death - Pierce Me
Quo Vadis - Defiant Imagination
Necromass - Abyss Calls Life
Voivod - Nothingface

"Djenty" "Deathcore-y" Prog Metal stuffs:

Ascariasis - Ocean Of Colour
Xehanort - Shinigami/Secret Reports(Birth is good too, but it's very chuggy and is only appealing if you liek Kingdom Hearts)
The Contortionist - Exoplanet
The Faceless - Akeldema
Fallujah - Harvester Of Wombs
The Syncope Threshold/I, Omega - Tale Of The Complex Circuit
Sikth - The Trees Are Dead And Dried Out, Waiting For Something Wild
Archons - Consequence Of Silence
Scale The Summit - Monument
Circles - The Compass
Skyharbor - Blinding White Noise

Here's just a weird rec. Trapt's first release, Amalgamation, is pretty cool and strange, so maybe worth a listen for you.

@Morph:
Holy shit! Now I have to go through that and figure what I don't have and then decide if I like it.

Edit:
That Trapt song is actually kind of cool. Be nice if all their work kept that vibe. Iirc, most of their stuff is more commercially friendly.

Their album Arm's Way is what I like to call "Progressive Pop", they have a very poppy/indie feel.

I would say Sufjan Seven's music is pretty progressive, check out The Age of Adz, it's a sort of electronic/dance musi, but with all this tense orchestral stuff over top.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8R_3mXZBsuU

Here is There was a band from Tulsa, Oklahoma. They were incredible
www.myspace.com/hereisthere
Their early material was all progressive music, it's hard to find, though there might be some stuff on youtube. But their later stuff was a little more toned down, they got a rapper and started adding more electronic stuff. Check out Hours Off, Greedy Nature, Try2 Want2 and Kwestions + Q'ancer
Some of their early stuff
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OuAk39l5okI

These are less metal choices or maybe less traditional prog bands, but isn't that what prog is all about

Free Moral Agents (Ikey from the Mars Volta's band)
Incubus (their album a Crow Left of The Murder is kindy of proggy, but they did some tracks for halo 2 called The Odyssey and they're stellar)
Muse (arguable)
John Frusciante too. his last 3 releases are pretty progressive (The Empyrean, Letur-Lefr and PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone)

you could check here

And we will weave in and out of sanity unnoticed
Swirling in blissfully restless visions of all our bleary progress
Glowing in radiant madness

Not gonna lie, the list I gave you isn't very good. Outside of Progressive/Psychedelic Rock from the 70's, I really don't know much about Prog Rock or Metal. I would definitely suggest going on Prog Archives and checking their lists, though. It's the Metal-Archives of the Prog world.

Well, I'll do that. But I feel like this is some good stuff to start off with. I'm familiar with Prog Metal, not so much with Prog Rock though (beyond the obvious ones like Yes, King Crimson, ELP, etc.). So, yeah...

I'm still trying to connect that 1st Trapt album to how their other albums sound so...stale though. I mean, it's not really something I'd call well-composed, but it is interesting.

Spock's Beard - The Light, V and Snow are good albums. The Flower Kings are also good. Try their first three albums: Back in the world of adventures, Retropolis and Stardust we are. Anekdoten are proggy King Crimsonesque., so def check them out.

Have you tried listening to the 2000ish band Sentenced? The lead singer Ville is now singing for Poisonblack. Unfortunately the guitarist Miika Tenkula is dead but, his work is awesome to listen to (and try and play), They hailed from Finland. The " Cold White Light " was good but, all of their early stuff was.

I could give you a load of stuff I discovered via bandcamp, but you'd have to give me a while. Also, it's mostly Prog Metal, AND I'd prefer to PM it. (It's like 50 bands, not even joking, lol.)

Presto Ballet is a good one. Founded in 2005 by the guitarist of Metal Church. Their sound is similar to classic 70s prog bands.
