I have no idea if this band actually fits into the metal forum, but whatever.

Boris are a band from Japan that play drone, doom, and other wierd stuff. They have done collaborations with Merzbow and Sunn O))). They are like Sunn O))) sometimes, but better. And they've been around longer than Sunn O))).

I'm starting to like this band. Anyone else?

Excellent band. Them >>>>>>>> SunnO)))
They do all kinds of stuff actually, Doom Metal, Drone, Stoner Rock, weird ambient acoustic...

I'm not that big of a fan of Borsi for whatever reason. They just don't do much for me.

They're okay. I prefer their more abstract stuff like Amplifier Worship over their listener-friendly records like Pink. I don't like them better than SunnO))) though. Drone should be dark, and O' Malley hits the nail on the head there.

Not necessarily - the last Earth album wasn't exactly what I would call dark, and that was outstanding.
SunnO))) are overrated anyway.

Earth never did it for me either. I'm just fine with SunnO))), maybe throw some Halo or Khanate in their from time to time. But those are bigger names. The really good drone is the stuff way, way underground.

I love me some Boris. Amplifier Worship is my favorite, the screams are rediculous. Well thats my favorite for when I'm really baked.

Naki Kyoku is one of my favorite tracks by them, so relaxed. Great backround music.

Feedbacker is great. So much buildup.

I found a site with their discography, but I probably can't post it here or I'll get banned or something.

I loooooooooooooooves it

Their new crust album is crunchy and delicious, like cheezits.

Never listened to their stuff, but I love their collaboration with SunnO))) - its freaking amazing.

Boris always kinda bored me. As did Sun O))).

Maybe this drone or whatever you want to call it just isn't for me. *shrug*

I guess I just don't like drone... got the album they did with SunnO))), didn't really like it.

Should I have started with something else?

I've been listening to Feedbacker on repeat for the last few months. All their albums rule so very very hard.

Can someone give me a good starting point for this band? Or any general rec?

I've only recently heard about them, and are interested in them.

Thanks.

Absolutego and Amplifier Worship could be a good starting point, but seeing as Boris have a freight train worth of discography in a lot of genres, it's a bit difficult. Maybe pick up the collaboration with Sunn O))) (Altar) first.

And may I add, what a brilliant live act

I HAVE Altar!

Wow.... I've only listened to it once (I haven't been in the mood for ambient doom stuff for quite some time) but I never realised Boris was on there. I just downloaded it because I had heard about Sunn O))).

And I'll check those out Emenius. Thanks.

Heavy Rocks is an awesome starting point if you like stoner rock.

I'd recommend Akuma No Uta to most people though, its got some of everything. Intro is droney, 2 faster rocky tracks, and then some chiller stuff.

Anyone know the chances of finding Boris cds in Japan? I was planning on downloading all of the full-lengths, but I decided that I like them so much that I wanted to have the real cds instead. I know some people like kirkisking who don't own any real cds.

I've heard a bit of their stuff, and I didn't really think they were as good as Sunn O))) or Earth. But I'll give them another go if I can find Amplifier Worship.

Actually, when my dad went to Sweden, he asked a bunch of people if they know Opeth and nobody knew what he was talking about. I guess Opeth's popularity reigns in the U.S.

I wanted to know if this would apply for Boris too, since I have no idea whether people in Japan know them or not.

Of course people in Japan know who they are nub.

This thread has been gone too long.

Epic bump ftw.

Anyway, my taste for Boris has flourished over the past 11 months. In fact, I'm currently listening to the album "Smile".

Great, great stuff. "Pink" is great, as well. You just can't go wrong with some good Boris.
