Hey gang, I'm thinking about taking part in our university's national exchange program and I would really like to hit an area that has some kind of metal scene...What would you people say is the best state/city for the metal scene?

As far as California goes, Santa Cruz, San Francisco, San Diego, and Los Angeles are probably the most prominent here, Sacramento is good, but I wouldn't say that you'd have as much "opportunity" as you would in the larger cities.

In Houston check out: Since the Ashes, Merlin's Beard, Shot to Death, Lay to Waste, The Fight Scene, Schoolgirl Knifefight.

Houston, Texas

Yeah baby, reppin' da H!

But yeah, pretty much all of the major Texas cities have something coming through. Even if there's a tour that's not coming through Houston, a few hours on the highway can get you to whatever, if you're willing to put forth the effort.

I think compared to other cities it def. is. The scene isn't huge, but has a really good underground following. Mainly because there's a lot of big names in death metal who live there. It's not uncommon to see members of Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, etc. walking around at a show.

Well, i live in southern california (orange country) and there are a bunch of metal concerts happening around here all the time. The metal scene its self is pretty underground and not seen on a daily basis, but there are a bunch of shows happening here all the time, for example, in the past year, the two most notable concerts ive been to have been dimmu borgir/behemoth and amon amarth/ensiferum and they were both only about 20 mins away from my house.

check this website for the concerts happening in southern california

We may have spawned Absu, and Averse Sefira, but the topic starter means cities with a metal scene. Houston's metal scene is nonexistent.

I agree. But the gentleman has a Massacra link in his sig, so I am positively predisposed to think him correct in all matters of taste.

However, from my experience...

The Austin scene is insular and selfish and all the local favorites are shit. Averse Sefira are the good band from Austin.

San Antonio is fanatical, but has no local bands, so it's a mishmash of touring acts from hard rock through grindcore.

Houston is too big, the clubs suck, and it has no local bands.

Legendary Texas bands:

Rigor Mortis
dead horse
Necrovore
Absu
Averse Sefira
Imprecation
Texas Metal Alliance
Devastation
Divine Eve

And that's about it!
