im pretty much a complete noob when it comes to this kind of stuff but what is the difference between active and passive pickups? all i know is that i have passive pickips in my schecter. which are better for a heavier, crunchier tone?

uhm not really, actuve pickups require batteries because they are more powerful, tend to better for getting br00talz distortion but people complain about the tone a lot, for cleans they have basically no hum, which people like, but not a great tone.
its personal preference try some out
