Hey people, I'm going to go see Paul Gilbert in Leeds tomorrow and have a question to ask. I know the chances are slim but I'm going to take my pgm301 in its hard case in case i have the opportunity to get Paul to sign my guitar.

Any advice from gig experience on how to get the signature on my PGM?

I rung the venue and I'll be allowed to take it in

I wanted to go see paul gilbert at the spring and airbrake in Belfast, his only show in Northern Ireland for probably another year, and it has to be over 18s only.

Well, if PG is going to do a signing session, it will be after the show. With PG it seems to be all or nothing; either he doesn't sign anything or he takes his time to sign as much as possible.

If you can store the guitar in your car that would be ideal. Otherwise, ask if the people at the venue can hold on to it for you.

By the way, here's my Caparison after Gilbert got his hands on it:

WOW.

If you're going to get it signed, I suggest sticking some paper on the guitar in an area that won't be rubbed against often, and asking him to sign there. It won't wear off quite so fast.

I plan on getting it signed behind the bridge and on the back where the electrical cover is

If you want it on the front, I'd go for one of the horns. Another popular place is the back of the headstock.

If you just want the cavity plate signed, you can just leave the guitar at home.

The claokroom should be fine, although keep in mind that the venue might not be to keen on holding your guitar for you; be sure to ask them very nicely and calling ahead is recommended.

I dunno, Vai can get pretty bluesy or whatever at times, and Satch's work is just overflowing with awesome. You can tell, even through headphones, that he was really into the music.
But I guess those two are the answer to every shred question ever.

I can't say Paul Gilbert doesn't play with feel, but half the time there's no chord sequence or anything backing him and his flurry of notes; you need to be watching him to tell, IMO.

Paul Gilbert has a very diverse discography. Yes, he can shred, but as said above, he does have a great sense of melody. Listen to a song like "Muscle Car" or pretty much anything from the "Burning organ" record; they're just amazing songs in general, not just because of the shredding.

Also, Paul Gilbert live is quite a unique experience. Unlike some other artists he never seems to have a bad night. At all. He just enjoys playing on stage, making his gigs more than worth going to.

Thanks for suggesting to get it signed on the horns, now i think of it it's probably a better place to have it done.

And i forgot, probably his greatest song ever :P

What an asshole I would be if I took offence at somebody disagreeing with my opinion. No offence taken.
I guess I was being foolish basing my opinion solely on Scarified
I can see your point. It'll never be B.B. King expressive, but no shred will ever be, 'cause it's not blues. But at the same time, I'd like to see the "ironically" nicknamed Slowhand play with Gilbert's effortless speed.

Anyway, on topic. Wait 'till the end of the gig, then see if he's doing a signing session. If not, well, I dunno. Never done it myself, as until I go see AC/DC next year the only real rock gig I ever went to was Queen+Paul Rodgers, or perhaps more correctly, Brian May, Roger Taylor and that guy from Free. And I'm never gonna get my instrument signed by either of those bands >.>

i'm going to see him on friday...

my big concern with getting anything expensive signed is that it could get damaged and/or nicked at the concert- bringing the cavity cover might be a good idea as bonsaiishchaap cleverly suggested, as even if it were broken, it wouldn't be a major problem.

you can sometimes get it signed by being at the very front and handing it up to the guitarist (i saw that happen once at a satriani gig), but again, it's risky as your guitar could get wrecked in the crowd.
I'm an idiot and I accidentally clicked the "Remove all subscriptions" button. If it seems like I'm ignoring you, I'm not, I'm just no longer subscribed to the thread. If you quote me or do the @user thing at me, hopefully it'll notify me through my notifications and I'll get back to you.

During the gig I went to some people held up a sign saying "Will you sign our guitars after the show?" His response was: "If we meet... and I have a pen".
