Is there a reason you meantion Nihilist not Entombed and Mantas and not Death? You do get more internet pose points if you're that way inclined I guess...

I've found loads of people (me included) prefer Nihilist to Entombed.

i prefer Dismember's last demo to the albums, but I always thought 'Clandestine' was the best by Nihilist/Entomber.

I didn't want people to include later era Death in that. So I just said Mantas. And Nihilist is much better I think.

Right naow, I'm into the necessities (for me)...

Cannibal Corpse
Suffocation
Immolation
Edge of Sanity
Psycroptic
Morbid Angel
I've found Jesus

But Amorphis and Abhorrence don't really have the same kind of connection as Nihilist/Entombed and Mantas/Death do. They are just two separate bands. They only have one member in common and that is T.Koivusaari and he isn't even the main songwriter in Amorphis.

It just sounds silly to classify early Death albums as Mantas. When talking about your favorite bands why not say "early Death" if you dont want to include the progressive era. The same way people include Metallica in their favorite lists.

is anyone else disappointed with the death metal underground scene
ive just gone trhough about 50 underground/unsigned/upcoming bands on myspace
and all of them sound the same
and an extraordinary ammount use drum machines?
what happened to all the drummers

some good ones i found though were "human effluence" and "gutted out"
i liked these too.

and do you guys prefer your death technical, brutal or melodic?
#62
I don't listen to much death metal, and I've only recently began to delve into the genre. But Incantation, Infester, Imprecation, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Death, Angelcorpse, Dismember, Demigod, and Bloodbath have all been getting listens from me lately. To be honest, most death metal I try to listen to ends up boring me.

So, can anyone recommend me some bands similar to Incantation? I've been digging their first two albums, a lot.
#63
Don't know Incantation, but more people need to give Nocturnus a try. The Key and Thresholds are both awesome bits of technical/prog death metal.

hell yes. Nocturnus is a great band. I was reading something where Muhammed of Necrophagist listed Mike Davis as one of his biggest inspirations. Im actually listening to Nocturne in Bm right now. In response to Black Metals post, I prefer old school to the new. However there are some great newer bands. Spawn of Possession, Severed Savior, Decrepit Birth, Visceral Bleeding, Aeon, and Sleep Terror to name a few.

I prefer real Death Metal (old school) and an astounding amount of those myspace "death metal" bands are ****ty wannabe "brutal" death metal made by scene kids who heard their first Cannibal Corpse album last week.

Sometimes I wonder why those myspace bands even try. If you're not going to do anything new, why bother? The way most bands go about doing their business is either going faster, going more brutal, or both. Unfortunately, being fast is never a substitute for poor songwriting, so bands in this category with their fast tremolo, Kerry King tribute whammyfests and blasts always fail.

Then there is the "hai guize, letz be az brootle as possible. like, wer so brootal" attitude where bands will attempt to write heavy music and then fail because all they really know how to play is more tremolo and think that holding an E5 in Drop Bb tuning makes them really heavy.

Again, the way I see it is that Cannibal Corpse was one of the first to do it well (incorporate gore, brutality, tightness, and of course have an original sound while they're at it) back in the day. They did it well back in the day, and arguably, they're still doing better than most bands. The other bands that don't fall into that "most dm" category are usually bands that are in the same league as CC in terms of quality. IMO there are very few bands (if any) that actually surpass CC in terms of brutality. The brutal California method ala Deeds and Decrepit Birth, while being fast, doesn't have the heaviness or brutality as CC sound crushing when they slow down (and those bands don't like to slow down much). I know people could argue with me all day about how Origin's Antithesis or Nile's In Their Darkened Shrines is heavier/brutal, whatever, but to me CC always has this authenticity with their music. Yes, there are faster bands, and yes there are more varied bands incorporating more melody. Are those better? 98 times out of 100, no.
I've found Jesus
#74
Yeah, exactly, all these bands are trying to go faster and more brutal, but they honestly end up way less extreme. In the 80's, going faster and more brutal is how extreme metal started, but now very few people know how to do it, they just know how to chug/tremolo pick/whammy rape (the bad kind)/blast. And most of the feeling is gone too, it's very hard to make extreme music if you don't have the passion.

The thing I love about Mortician is that they're the epitome of stupid brutality (I mean this in the absolute best way possible) I mean, retardedly fast blast beats, guitars tuned down to G, bass so distorted it sounds like farts, really low monotone growls, 2 minute long songs where half of the song is an insanely cheesy slasher movie sample. That said, they're one of the most fun bands to listen to.
