I just want to collect a list of all the songs you people think guitarists should know how to play. Remember though, everyone has their own taste, so do not criticize.

Ill put down Fade to Black - Metallica

Fail.

I could care less about Metallica.

Even if one should know how to play these songs, what makes you think one is interested in them? If one should learn how to play certain songs, then look up Jazz.
If you play guitar, please don't waste your time in The Pit, and please instead educate yourself in the Musician Talk forum, where you can be missing out on valuable info.

They should know whatever they want to.

There shouldn't be an unwritten (or, in this case, poorly written) set of songs everyone should know.

If that was the case, music that has guitar included would never progress.

We would all be stuck learning the solo to "The Fury of the Storm" by DragonForce, give up, and become successful IT specialists.

Wow TS, this is a seriously great, original idea.

Anyway, I'm off, for some reason I have the strongest urge to listen to The Ramones.

Paint It Black is a pretty popular song for beginners to learn so I put that down. But,
I'd like to meet someone that can play Bleed by Meshuggah

Blitzkrieg Bop- Ramones.

I took a different route when I started, I jumped straight into audioslave ("Like A Stone" FTW), I never learned Iron Man or Smoke On The Water, just because it was almost too cliche to know those songs, but anyway, I cast my vote for...
...Kryptonite by 3 Doors Down
or for superbeginners
Epiphany by Staind.

Ultimately- Learn what you want to learn!

every guitarist should know the major scale, and maybe the minor. after that i wouldnt presume to know what to impose on people.

...
I have no opinion on this matter.

heres my list, if you can't play these already you are not a true guitarist and should put all of your gear on eBay immediately.

Money and Bitches - Hypnoskull
Mutiny in Heaven - The Birthday Party
Forgotten Land - Merzbow
Insignificant Resistance - Ego Ex Nihil
Slave - Spiritual Front

yeah if you can't play all of these songs perfectly already you have no business playing guitar.

Agreed. Every guitar player should know at least a setlist full of jazz standards, enough that they could sit in with a band and jam, bass players too. Even if they hate jazz, they should still know it because then they'd probably learn a shitload of theory, which does everyone good no matter what.

EDIT: If you weren't you Thorazine, I would have thought you were serious

oh I am serious, anyone who can't play songs based on my clearly superior music taste is a total posuer. People are all like "but only two of those tracks even have guitar on them" and I'm just like STFU n00b.

I've seriously never met anyone that liked The Birthday Party.

(Granted I've never looked for another fan, but still)

Yeah, since there's no guitar in the songs, they have to learn it on the bagpipes to be taken seriously as a guitar player.
#25
Just as a note, we should make this a list of song that other cocky guitarists will beat you up for not knowing as a show of their own worthiness.

"WTF?? HA what a fag guys, he can't play stariway to heaven, let's beat him up. That'll show him"

Nah, I could care less.

I'm not bashing on Metallica, they're good, but I just hate the notion of idiots telling me that I should learn this certain song that doesn't interest me.
