i have been trying for a long time to play these lamb of god-ish triplets on the e-string but i just can't get the hold of it. should i get a metronome to practice them or are there some ways where you can practice it without having to invest in one?

They're not called triplets.

Triplets = Three times 1/X where X is the note duration.

The thing that LoG uses is usually referred to as gallop, and looks like:

1/X + 1/X + 2/X in structure.

But all it takes is practice.
