Hi,

I'm currently playing through a spider iii 150, it's not as bad as some people say

But I'm gonna upgrade and judging by all the praise they get on here, a tube amp is probably the best way to go.

My budget is at max £450.

I gig and play heavy rock (Motorhead kind of level) but i'd need it to have some pretty decent cleans aswell.

What's the best way to go?

Cheers

Laney LC30

Good for cleans, can pull of motorhead i'm sure,

and around 450!

watch out for the brightness though (a set of JJs can aid that)

Will that be loud enough if it's not pa'd up for small gigs?

check out the Marshall DSL 401 as well, that thing has alot of gain,
30 watts or over in a tube is by all means gigable

If we're getting into the sort of price it is for a DSL 401.

Would my money be better spent on a Peavey Valve King half stack or not?

The Laney would likely be more than loud enough, as would a 50 watt VK combo. A halfstack is probably overkill. I didn't find the cleans all that bad on the VK but some flame it for them. A Traynor YCV50 Blue would also hit the tones your after if you can find one in budget near you.

I had a quick look round on the internet and couldn't find any Traynors around me at a reasonable price.

Would the extra "oomph" that a half stack delivers be worth the jump in price?

BTW, i'd like this amp to be the amp i have for the next 5 years if possible
