I am looking into buying a 6 or 8 string bass, because my band is all of a sudden getting into more technical styles of music. I am playing with a Schecter Damien 4-string and It is not versitile enough for me to play. I am wondering what I should get, if I was to trade in my Damien. I'll be able to afford anything within a $600 range if I turned it in.

My question is to what I should actually look into getting, I really don't know what to look for in a 6 string or what company even makes a good one.

Summary:
-I play Metal (Black, Death mostly)
-Bands my guitarists are starting to get influence from (Nile, Necrophagist, and Vital Remains)
-Looking for a 6 or 8 string bass for near $600
-Looking for a good bass to tap and sweep on

Any help would be much appreciated. -Thanks

I need some music that makes you envision a dark room illuminated by only candles and perhaps a creepy middle aged man in a bathrobe.

My top 2 choices for a 6-string bass.

I voted for the LTD because it's neck-thru, has better tuners, and more controls. The pickups are practically the same quality, EMG-HZ is just luaghable.

The only problem with the Ibanez is the medium frets as far as I can tell.
We've drained full confession booths, polluted drinking wells with our repentances, and then stood grinning with our arms around the shoulder of a rotting child.

If you resist change, you will be here forever.

Ibanez SR 506 or a Scecter Stilleto Elite 6.

I wouldn't call what we have here on the Bass Forum a mentality. It's more like the sharing part of an AA meeting.

This:

We have one at our local music store, and EVERY bassist LOVES the thing. I kid you not...this bass is like the holy grail...but for some reason noone buys it. I think its the lack of versatility in terms of practical application. Most local bass players outside metalcore are playing 4 stringers.

But man, what a tone. Those ibanez basses are top quality, and dirt cheap!

I would try the LTD D6. I have the LTD D4 and it's a great bass. I'm actually trying to trade it in for the D6 atm but my local doesn't usually do trade ins. I'll talk them around though

I'm dying to know what kind of 8-string you'd be looking at at that price range beyond a Korean made Galveston off eBay.

I was looking at a used Warwick Vampyre LTD 5'er for about $200. I went home to grab my wallet and came back and some jerk with an epic beard got it already..
