Been playing for almost 7 months now and starting to realize some things just sound much better and are easier playing with all down strokes (if I have the speed). From the beggining I figured alot of quicker riffs were played with alternate picking, because to me, it seemed easier, probably because I didnt have the speed to use all downstrokes. My question now is, would the normal general rule of thumb be, if I can play it with all down strokes and it sounds better then thats the way to do it?

Yes, if you can and they sound good, why not?

But remember that fast solos and galloping should not be played with all downstrokes.
