Do rectifiers play a big role in tone of an amp? And are tube or diode rectifiers better?

not really. tube rectifiers have a little more sag. the attack isn't as fast. works great for some sounds. you can hear the difference if you know to listen for it, but i didn't think it was a very pronounced change.
but for metal guys, who tend to go for a tight, punchy sound, the diode works better, in my opinion.
that and if you're talking about the mesa stuff, you don't get the option of a tube rectifier until you get into dual or triple rec models, both of which have higher wattage than the single rec, which means you have to crank the volume absurdly high to get power tube distortion.
