Ok, so I've got until Monday to do an article for my college magazine on the top 5 metal albums of 2008. But I'm really not entirely sure what I'd put in my top 5, there have been so many great albums out I actually can't decide =S

At the moment, I'm thinking:

1) All That Remains - Overcome
2) 36 Crazyfists - The Tide and its Takers
3) Trivium - Shogun
4) Metallica - Death Magnetic
5) All Shall Perish - Awaken the Dreamers

I know some of you will completely disagree, but I'd like to see what other people think =)

I can only think of three that I particulary cared about at the moment:

EDIT: I remembered two more, so it IS a top five now.

1) Opeth - Watershed
2) Amon Amarth - Twilight of the Thunder God
3) Satyricon - The Age of Nero
4) Slipknot - All Hope is Gone
5) Gojira - The Way of All Flesh

Why is everybody posting metalcore when the title clearly says "Top 5 METAL albums of 2008"?

4 obZen (Meshuggah)

Because a metalcore album won UG's best spot on it's top 10 metal albums of the year in 2007. It'll be awesome if Fortress takes it this year.

edit: some good competition this year though, what with opeth releasing an album and all

No, I loved it too! Amazing that they can still rock, the album just wasn't in my top 5 Perhaps number 6 or 7

Metalcore is metal, that's why it's called METALcore. And if that's not good enough: It's because we don't take things that literat. If we did we would have and endless number of fav albums threads: "Top industrial metal!", "Top Math metal", "Top progressive metal", "top mathcore", "top technical death metal", "top melodic death rock sauce"
#37
1. FORMATION OF DAMNATION (WTF IT'S LIKE THE BEST METAL ALBUM TO COME OUT THIS YEAR AND THERE ARE LIKE TWO PEOPLE NAMING IT Ö
2.Indestructible (more solos from dan YAY!!!!)
3.Motorizer (classic...)
4.Fortress (love the guitars parts...but unfortunetely i can't stand the vocals ...)
5.Scream Aim Fire (dunno why but i liked it...)

Yeah, too bad Watershed was kind of a letdown (well, for me at least). It's still a great album, but some parts of it wasn't just for people like me I guess.
#40
Definitely include Opeth and Gojira.

EDIT: ^I do agree with you about Opeth...it didn't seem quite as polished as "Ghost Reveries" did, which I thought was a phenomenal album. Still, Opeth...it's like complaining that a gold bar is dented...
