I have noticed quite a lot of criticism and bad mouthing towards people in general considering entering any branch of the military. It seems a lot of people's arguments towards this are "Why dont they try to do something with their lives?" I sure as hell get that a lot.

Apparently, to many people, there is something wrong with wanting to serve your country and trying to better yourself. Myself, I dont have many options or interests aside from music but joining the military has always been a lifelong goal of mine that I plan to pursue.

So I just wanted to hear what people think about this, but keep it remotely civil.

I've always been interested in joining the military. I'd join the Irish one but very little goes on in it.
I could also join the US army, I'd have interesting stories to tell when I got back etc, and with my qualifications I could earn quite a lot of money.
However, then I remember that I enjoy having my legs attached to my body and that I would hate to be forced to fight in a war I didn't agree with (pretty much all wars) or kill someone.

I might join as a psychologist, but the I suppose I'd be implicit in it. I dunno...

Being a pacifist I believe there are any number of better ways to "better yourself", not to mention the fact that your country is engaged in an illegal war that should never have started.

But if that's what you really want to do I don't see why anyone should feel like they have the right to argue with you.

You might have to kill, get maimed or killed just because Washington fat cats want to make a buck for their friends. And if you get back, everyone will forget about you and you'll be left alone with memories of what happened out there.

Think carefully.

AIR FORCE AIR FORCE AIR FORCE! seriously though, im in AFROTC and we do community service events, all kinds of cool stuff (this year we did indoor skydiving and paintball!!) plus the combat dining-in which is a blast, if anyone wants to discuss this shoot me a message. but I would 100% recommend going through ROTC to get in, since you get your degree and all kinds of training for when you decide to leave!

Psh. AF ROTC is weak. If your still in HS, look at a service academy. Seriously, ROTC doesnt send 450 people through jump school each summer.

Sure, there are sacrifices any way you go, so you gotta do it for you. IF its something you want to do, serve your country, there are ways to do it in the military without touching a weapon outside of basic.

Do what you feel is right for you.

I'm guessing you're in America, so what I say probs won't apply. I can't say I really agree with the whole conflict situation at the moment, myself I'd hate to be put in a position where I might HAVE to do something that I didn't agree with. But I think the military in general probably gets a bit too much stick. At least with the British Armed Forces, there's a lot of peace-keeping and 'community work' (not sure of official term) going on, so they're actually doing a lot to help a lot of people. Don't let what people say get in the way of what you want to do though, it's about how you feel about yourself, not what other people think of you.

Hah.

If you think that's what you'll achieve by joining the military, you're extremely naive.

some of these responses are just hilarious....an illegal war? really? hahaha... if you are looking into the military do not go talk to a recruiter...i dont know if you are in college or high school but find someone who is in the particular branch you are thinking about and talk to them..nothing better than first hand experience from someone you can actually talk to...i believe joining the military is something that is done on a personal level. there are so many different jobs that you can do inside the military that is absolutely ridiculous but dont expect anyone to hand you a job when you get out besides going into something like language that will get you top security clearance...

I myself would never join the infantry or the navy. But I could consider the Air Force (go R.A.F.)

PDTs my friend, in between your freshman and sophomore year theres ALL kinds of jump programs, and even Glider flights. Do your homework first.

Edit: and I love the comments saying the USA considers a soldier "expendable". They spend WAY too much money on the individual soldier's training to just send him off to die.

Ive NEVER heard anyone say why don't you do something with your lives in regard to ppl in service. Service isn't a bums job, everyone knows that.

Where the hell do you live that people say that??

That being said I'd never consider our services.

Whereas a service academy runs those programs . i know that for AF ROTC they take jump at USAFA, as well as Global engaugement(mock deployment), gliders training (aka Soaring), and space . (well not all of them, but guess who gets top slots to go to those that are run by the "real" military ie air assualt school)

I did do my homework.

EDIT: not trying to be an ass, just keeping up old rivalries and showing other options.

I am sick and tired of war. It's glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.

On one hand, military provides a lot of support if you're starting a life, especially in western countries. Things like courses/education, accommodation, etc etc, with fairly decent pay, and training that you wouldn't get elsewhere.

The really bad side effect is that you can enter a war that you vehemently disagree with, without freedom of making an informed judgement.

People often enter because of the support factor, but they forget that eventually there'll be a time when they're sent into action, and can be injured, killed, or left with psychological damage.

So while there are advantages, there are a lot of things to think about. Serving your country and being part of defending your country, whatever that country is, is an honourable and noble thing. BUT the reality is obviously quite different, and sometimes you are not protecting the interests you thought you were.

Perhaps that's why the criticism.
