Is the Boss Micro Br good for you to record over a backing track (from a guitar magazine) in order to let friends hear, to see how clean my playing is and for recording my own ideas for songs onto?

Or is there a better machine in the same or lower price range?

Yeah it is. If you wanted to record something real quick not over a backing track, the best thing to do would to hit the record button while in the MP3 player mode. This allows you to record directly to mp3 format. If you wanted to record over a backing track, you'd have to be in the 4 track mode, and import the backing track into one of the tracks. But yes it's a very handy tool to have. Plus you can put songs on it, and slow them down to practice those fast solo's
