im looking to get a new tube amp. ill be using it for some bedroom playing, but also for playing with some friends, hopefully getting a band together soon. so should i get the peavey vypyr 60 or the valveking 112. or maybe even the B-52 AT-112 if both of those suck?

personally i own a valveking and its already crapped out on me... and personally the OD channel just sucked.. i prefered the vyper O_o

Vypyr 60 is not out yet - but should be nice based on solid state versions.

Lots of people, including myself, have Valvekings and like them just fine. We have a ton of clips in The Valveking Thread.

Never played a B-52 unfortunately but people seem to like them too.

Sorry - not much help I guess. I would look at used gear too in your budget range. What kind of music to you play and what is your closest major city.

no offense, but $500 is not a large budget

it can get you an entry level tube amp

or look at used gear like this:

Traynor YCV40WR $600 (if you can stretch) i think this is a valve amp

Peavey Classic 30 $300 (might be a stretch for some of stuff you play but a damn fine amp)
http://buffalo.craigslist.org/msg/929007049.html

Mesa Nomad 55 $625 (more of a blues amp I think and a bit over budget)

Line 6 Flextone III $450

Peavey XXX combo $650 (i know that is a stretch but a great amp for what you play)
http://buffalo.craigslist.org/msg/924386397.html

Vox Valvetronix AD50VT $200

Peavey Transtube 4x12 half stack $275

Anyway, I'm just trying to make a point. Buffalo looks to be about 30 minutes from you.

well i actually ment the range was pretty large. not the actual price. and i do live about 30 min from buffalo.

ive asked this in a different thread, but didnt get an answer. but what kind of wattage should i be looking at for playing with some friends (drummer, singer, bassist, not a band yet) and bedroom practice? would 50-60 work? or be too much/little?

50 in a tube amp, provided it has a master volume, is really perfect, in my opinion. It gives you the volume you need to gig, and also, you can still get that tube sound when its turned down a bit (not really bedroom or night practicing) Alsoif you get one that can switch between wattage, I know the Peavey Classic 30 can (not sure what it switches between though), then you can run it at a lower wattage in your bedroom or practicing at home, and wide open with your band.
I'm Joel. I play guitar. I am a student. I look at the cost of tuition, not in a dollar value, but in the guitars I'm sacrificing now, to be able to buy later.

so are you saying that 50 in a bedroom is a bit much?

Well, a 50 watt tube amp at bedroom volumes just wont warm up the tubes like it will at higher volumes. It won't sound bad, still better than a solid state, but it wont sound as good as it does at 1/4, half, or 3/4 volume

so 50 should probably do the job?
