Can anyone think of any songs which discuss religion without being actual praise and worship songs?

I'm thinking of:

Dream Theater- Repentance
Mike Lindup- The Spirit is Free

I think Akercocke, Gorgoroth and Deicide have some religion based songs, but Deicide is pretty much a joke.

screeching weasel - "the science of myth"
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewUhx_-3kOQ

If you've ever questioned beliefs that you hold you're not alone
But you oughtta realize that every myth is a metaphor
in the case of Christianity
and Judaism there exists the belief
that spiritual matters are enslaved to history
The Buddhists believe that the functional aspects override the myth
while other religions use the literal core to build foundations with
See half the world sees the myth as fact
while it's seen as a lie by the other half and
the simple truth is that it's none of that and
somehow no matter what the world keeps turning
Somehow we get by without ever learning
Science and religion
are not mutually exclusive
In fact for better understanding
we take the facts of science and apply them
And if both factors keep evolving
then we continue getting information
but closing off possibilities
makes it hard to see the bigger picture
Consider the case of the woman
whose faith helped her make it through
when she was raped and cut up left for dead
in a trunk her beliefs held true
It doesn't matter if it's real or not cause
some things are better left without a doubt and
if it works then it gets the job done
Somehow no matter what the world keeps turning
Somehow we get by without ever learning

Not exactly, 'praising' religion....

Repentance is not about religion. It's part of the AA Suite.

But, to answer your question, Crystal Mountain by Death.

type o negative - it's never enough

lyrics:
f*ck you god
f*ck you god
f*ck you god

With my blood, time, sweat and tears
My goal is to dissolve her fears
f*ck you god Self-imposed imprisonment
In this way feels she must repent - must repent

In a cell denial made
Break the lock, free her from her cage
f*ck you god Realizing her days be few
Just want to make her comfortable - comfortable

No matter what i do
No matter what i do
It's never enough

they're a very religious band, as you can tell.

Granted these are bands comprised of Christians.

I don't really know many songs that are about religion (right now I can only think "Losing My Religion" by REM), but if you want something about Christianity then there are TONS of Christian bands out there who play music that isn't Praise & Worship.

These lyrics are great. They are anti-religious but they are still intelligent.

Pretty much all Thrice lyrics have some sort of Christian-influence. They're also ****ing amazing.

And +1 to This Godless Endeavor. Incredible song.
