The plan - build a custom guitar for a sum less than or equivalent to 100GBP

The problems - this isn't enough to build a guitar with good parts, so you've got to use your ingenuity to come up with cheap options that will work just as well. Brian May made a roller bridge, coffee tables are a good source of wood. Your gonna have to beg, steal, borrow, and trade for everything.

The prize - ok, there isn't one, but I'm doing the above and I thought it'd be cool if we could do it as a group

The rules

100GBP to spend, for our american friends, due to differences in tax and the fact that you have a bigger country to ebay from - i figure $150 is good.

You can get the parts however you like, but I'm not really promoting theft - its just useful thats all I'm saying

Post your pics in GB and C and if anyone actually takes up the challenge we'll get a vote up.

Dont use a previous guitar! I mean you can, but it gives you an advantage over me so I'd rather you didn't!

I was thinking get all materials by Jan 30th (you can make use of sales) and then have the guitar finished by the end of summer holidays?

Emm . . . anything else just post it here, or pm me. It'd be really cool if one other person took up this challenge

Ah, well it could be any sum of money really - its just a figure I set for myself. Im a student you see and I get my loan in January, so I knew that if i didn't set a budget then I'd spend my entire loan on guitar parts instead of food.

This isn't an official competition - it'd just be cool to have someone to say - i'm struggling finding some money for a bridge, how are you managing? and things too

builds take a long time, if yous building with other people it might give you that edge when u dont wanna carry on to just go a bit longer.
#4
This is a really cool idea! At $150 bucks I figure I had better start learning how to wind pickups!

Edit: Well I guess closer to $180 CDN for me.
#5
^ $180 for Canadians then?

Ok, so let me get this straight, we can use any parts we want? Even broken/old/used guitars. that we already own?

Guitar done by end of summer holidays sounds easy.

I'm in!

i pretty much already did this on accident by being cheap. my epi sg started as a 40 dollar body add 25 for pick ups and 25 for bridge and stop bar and then free neck and about 20 in paint then 15 for pick up selector and 5 bucks for strings.

i thought about it, ill be getting 100$ for christmas, so i guess im in

plus, i have enough poplar to make the neck, and i already have an old body lying around, as well as a emg 81

It doesn't have to be exactly that - its just a guideline figure. Im glad some people are getting into this

I'm already in the middle of one that will end up costing me $200 plus but either the next one or the one after that I will do for under $150.

glad we have another guy on board then - i'll be making mine from scratch - but it can all work. i think if maybe we set out to have all our parts by mid - end of january then maybe we can get a good start on it all.

the figure is a lot easier when you decide where you want to spend your money - if you want to buy good pickups then its probably going to be a case of buying an old coffee table for your body, if you want a great bridge then you might have to handwind your own pickups.

but its a cool plan i think.
#13
Sounds like a fun idea. I'll be watching this thread, but as for doing it myself, I'll put some thought into it.

You can't make a neck out of poplar, metalwarrior. As far as I know, anyway.

I'm in: I'm broke now, but my 6 year old brother has a cheap mini guitar that I could buy from him and salvage parts, and I was already planning on making one from a big table in our basement, and then use Christmas money for the rest... As long as school doesn't get in the way too much

Great idea, CobenBlack!

Glad we've got a few people involved now, sounds like we'll have some good ideas floating about between us.

guitar cam, i see your point about making a quality guitar, and thats fair, but 1. not everyone has the money, and 2. i'll be interesting to see just how good a guitar we can make on a low budget by using our imagination. i mean a tremolo system is only strings attatched to a spring/ claw - it should be possible to make if you've got lots of random stuff lying around.

that, and if you find yourself with an instrument you like - theres nothing wrong with going over budget and buying a seymour duncan, or something expensive. its just an idea for people.

i think i may have got my body free of charge - i'm looking into using my old toybox that i had when i had when i was a kid.

It should be entirely possible to make a quality guitar for $150. Lumber yards usually have some nice wood for less than you would spend buying a body blank from different places. If your at a university you can probably get some steel and have someone mill it for cheap or free if your university has a mechanical engineering department and workshop.
#23
Sounds like fun an it'll give me a reason to finally getting around to building the spalted maple top telecasters that I've been planning to do for the last 5 years.

Is this all going to be contained in this thread or each have different threads?
Not taking any online orders.
#24
I had this plan to buy a REALLY cheap strat and maul it into a pine tele with one bridge humbucker. it would have a different body, pickups, scratchplate, but similar hardware and the same neck. Would that count, or is it too much like buying a whole guitar and changing bits?

I don't want to say i'll do it indefinatly, but if i did it'd be over the christmas holidays as my flatmates are going home. at least, the woodwork would be, for noise etc. great idea though, i lack the motivation to get started building on my own. and I agree it's an exellent exersize in creativity.

I love this idea - I was going to make a laptop steel guitar next, but this looks like more fun.

Do we get any points/kudos for coming in under 100 squids?

The oldest local guitar shop is closing down this week - I was thinking of camping out in the guys wheelie bin for a few days to see what turns up!

i think if we have this thread for questions to other people doing it, and general comments like that - and then our own threads for the actual work then that might be a good idea. then i figure for the competition i'll post a seperate thread with links from each (or just a picture and a final price) and get people to decide which one is the best for the money.

if you want to take part and you have already got a body and a neck then i think it would be senseless wasting it - so i think its acceptable using it - tho it will be harder for the people who don't have pieces hanging around.

xgamergt04 - thats what im thinking - things can be made to a high quality by getting the materials and then asking favours of people - even for people who aren't students they can get a student to do it for them, or go to a uni and ask the tech department.

the competition won't be judged by me, because im taking part - but i will emphasise that the aim of the competition is to use your head to come up with ways around buying expensive parts, so hopefully the people who vote will take it into consideration.
#28
does getting parts as a christmas present count? 'cause if not, I'm in

I guess I'm in. I'm planning/getting parts for a walnut Soloist build. I'm rediculously poor also, so this should be fun.

BTW, make a new thread after we get all the competitors (delete this one), that way the new thread can be specifically for the builds and stuff and not a bunch of people saying "I'm in".
#31
I'm in. I'll be building a prototype for my company if it ever comes to being. I have an awesome design in mind already. Actually, mine might be done before the end of winter break. I intended to do it over winter break, and this is actually the price range I was going to aim for. (For the prototype)

I can't wait to see what everyone does. I've crunched the numbers, and it looks like I'm gonna just barely make it under the $150 mark if i cheap out on a few of the parts that are easy to upgrade later.

i can afford all of my stuff except for one thing- a Floyd
that was my original plan for this project anyway, i already have it planned. BUT I'll stick to the rules, and get it as a gift so im good then, correct,? cause everything else will come from me, except for the Floyd, all under 100 or w.e it is.

sounds good to me mate. Of course I wouldn't want someone to buy something that they didn't want and then be sorry - its just a rough thing - but yeah. Gifts are cool. I think I'm gonna be able to get an old toy box for my build.

build wise? taking an old start body, filling cavitys, planing the top, putting a carved quilted maple top on, scalloping some frets, and doing some other carves for fret access as well as putting in a gotoh floyd. will look something like this

its alot of extra work, but it's not like i have anything else to do, and i'll prob sell it for cash.

oh, and some EMG's 81/85
