Well, today, on my mom's Martin acoustic, I broke the third string (yes, the G string). It's really starting to piss me off because I and my mom keep breaking strings like every week now. But the thing that didn't make sense is that I downtuned the string
Now I understand that the release of tension is harmful to the neck, but does the same go for strings?

EDIT: Sorry, I'm a ****ing idiot, I accidentally posted this in the wrong forum. Please forgive my mistake. I guess the same problem goes for electric guitar too, so I guess it's not a huge deal.

It happened right at the nut. My theory is the nut cut it. I've heard of that happening. Can anyone back up that theory?
