Sorry if this has already been done but i felt like posting it. So yea there are some riffs I came up with that sound so much like others songs. One little tapping solo idea I had was in the song "Always With Me, Always With You" by Joe Satriani and I was so pissed when I heard it because I was gonna do a solo called "The Night" that was slower and stuff and i was listenin to Satch while doin homework and then I heard it. And also I wanted to do a kill 'em all type riff for one of my songs and by surprise I listen to "The Four Horsemen" and there it is. And I'm sure one of my other songs "Desert Storm", an instrumental I'm making had one of my best deserty themed riffs and one day I listened to a song randomly and it ends up having one part of that riff on it. Has this ever happened to any of you? THAT BAD?!?!?!

if you play around with enough scales you end up writing a lot thats already written. theres nothing you can sing that cant be sung.

...
I have no opinion on this matter.

I wrote Canon in D with a different picking pattern and the first riff to Wet Sand in the key of F ):

what happens to me is, i learn a song , say number of the beast, then i forget about it. Eventually, I'll get an idea for a riff that happens to be nearly the exact same thing. It really sucks.

I was trying to practice writing a song while I was reading "The Crusade" columns on this site. I came up with "Rainmaker" by Iron Maiden. I was pretty excited that it sounded so great until about 3 days later when I realized the song was on my MP3 player.
#13
yeah i came up with one of the basslines from acid rain by liquid tension experiment just a couple days ago

Yeah, it happens all the time, and then I change keys and tempo...

Then I realize it's also been taken...and I have to start all over again.

Yeah, but I used it anyway.
Why would I change it? I didn't steal it, its a different genre, and the rest of the music is different, as well as the rythym.

I had this sweet idea to just gallop on the open B string and have the drummer play in half time, riding the china... but I think another band might have done something similar....

...I kept it anyway...

I was improvising random stuff on the blues scale when I came up with something that sounded a lot like Always On the Run by Lenny Kravitz.

I wrote a song and it was almost exactly like Trust in You by The Offspring. Crazy thing is, I wrote it about 6 months before the album came out. I was pissed and honored at the same time. The only difference was the solo in their song didn't match mine. Everything else was spot on.

My friend wrote the chorus riff from Peace of Mind by Boston, and he had never heard it until I showed it to him.

I lol'd.

i do it all the time - theres only so many combinations of notes which sound good together, and, with the amount of gitar music out there...y'see?

All riffs are copied, to be fair.

But still, yeh happens to me or at least it sounds too much like the band which just annoys me. I'm terrible at making my own stuff up and i'm unoriginal ...

I tried making a Slayer-ish harmonized riff once, and ended up writing "Dead Skin Mask" in D.

I was a sad panda.

how much is 15,000 PHP? I didn't know they played guitar in the Phillipines. I thought they played ukelele or something.

Because, of course, we're too far away from places with guitars and all that stuff so we play ukelele...
