Hey pit.

i was given a completely empty case for a desktop computer a while ago, and i think i'll make a start at building it, but im not sure - i think what i'll need is gunna add up to more than buying it o_O

atm, ive got some ideas, but if you guys could help pick parts etc, then it'd be much appreciated...

ok, here goes (links to parts where applicable

2TB HDD (swapped from SSD of 128Gb)

4Gb DDR3 RAM

Intel Xeon 3.2 Ghz Processor

Graphics Card?
Sound card?
Motherboard (preferably to fit the above suggestions)
and what do i do bout ROM etc?

general other parts neccesary

Don't worry about the sound card for now.

In fact, most motherboards have pretty decent audio support built right into them. I have an ABIT MoBo that came standard with 5.1 support and it sounds great.

If I was you I would go for regular SATA than SSD. For a simliar price you could easily quadruple your HD space, and the benefits of the SSD aren't enough to lose all that extra space, IMO.

Yea mines came with Realtek HD audio support. Sounds good. Though I think the speakers you use make more of a difference.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231121 get RAM-2 of these

Now pick one of the motherboards and add it up with everything else and you'll see how cheap it is. All you're missing is a graphics card but I don't know if you wanan use it to play video games.

Woah woah woah...weren't you the chick who could barely afford a laptop?

How are you going to afford an Xeon? They're not even for normal computers, they're for servers.

Get a Core 2 Duo, not Core 2 Quad because most programs are not optimized to utilize quad cores yet.

You can get any C2D E8000 series and above.

The game requirements most likely are referring to a lower/older CPU that must be 3.0GHz or more. However, a 2.5Ghz C2D will easily be more powerful than a 3.0GHz Pentium 4, for example.

...modes and scales are still useless.
