Can the ZVEX SHO be used as an overdrive? Also, what exactly is the purpose of it? Like I know it's some sort of preamp pedal. But in what cases is it used for?

Thanks!

Also, does the volume increase too much when you turn the pedal up? Or does it just increase gain?

The Super Hard On is a boost. It pushes your amp (if it's tube) into overdrive.

When the pedal is set low, it boosts the clarity if your amp is particularly mushy sounding. At the higher settings, the Hard-On pounds the front end of the amp pretty aggressively.

Yep, its actually a great pedal and very transparent sounding so if you play through a very good amp, it lets your amp and guitar's true tone shine through.

It's not really that amazing, basically just a clean pre-amp minus the tone controls and with a buttload of signal gain available.

Since I'm guessing you're a little new to the world of effects pedals, you might want to consider saving your money and not getting such an expensive pedal like a Super Hard On. A simple multi-effects unit is fun and versatile. It'll give you a much better idea of how effects work, and what you may want to look for in future purchases.
Please don't assume I care enough about your guitar rig, your general thoughts on life, the funny things people have said about you, or anything else not related to the topic at hand to have the view signatures option turned on. I don't.

^I have an EHX DMM, Dr. Scientist Cosmichorus, HBE Psilocybe Phase, and Catalinbread Semaphore Tremolo. I think it would be a waste if I buy a multi-effects pedal.

i haven't tried it, but i guess it's a clean boost, isn't it? based on other clean boosts i've tried, if your amp is clean, it'll add a ton of volume (and a little dirt too), but if your amp is overdriven/distorted, it'll mostly add overdrive.

basically it depends on how your amp is set, headroom etc., it's to drive your amp more easily into overdrive at a slightly lower volume, but is meant to sound transparent(ish).

I'll have to put the Classic T models on my to-try list. Shame the finish options there are Anachronism Gold, Nuclear Waste and Aged Clown, because in principle the plaintop is right up my alley.
