After reading a thread about how undurable Ernie Ball strings are, I am kinda worried.

I used to use D'Addario 9s, but a few days ago i decided to get some higher gauge strings so i can tune to Drop C. I went to Best Buy (which has a new musical instruments section and is much more convenient for me since its 1/10 the distance that GC is for my house) and looked around. They didnt have any D'Addario 11s. But they did have Ernie Ball 11s. So I thought I might as well get them since I thought I should try out some new brands. I pooped them on 2 days ago and I love them, but after reading about how some said they barely last a month or so if u play frequently (I play for about 1 hour a day) I am worried.

When i used D'Addarios, I would not change them for 3-4 months (and they NEVER broke).

So, what I am asking you is: Which good/durable brand would you recommend?
EDIT: Also, how OFTEN should i change my strings if i play for about 1 hour a day?

Keep in mind i use 11s now.

THANKS!!!

Edit: ok let me clarify what i mean when i said i change them every 3-4 months. When i do change them after that amount of time, they are quite RUSTED and in no way bright.

You pooped strings?

I wouldn't take off the Ernie Balls right now. For future use, I recommend Elixirs, they last a long, long time. They're expensive, but worth it. They last so long that you'll actually save money if you use them.

But anyway, why not ask if the blokes at best buy can order D'Addarios for you if you like them? Any given music store that I know does that, so why not them?

No string is going to last you 3-4 months on a guitar if you play an hour a day, and if you think they last just becuase they don't break, you're sadly misinformed.

Lasting isn't a term for a string that doesn't break, it's a term for the corrosion and brightness in the string. They get gunky and slow feeling, the tone dulls. It's not just about breaking. If you're playing for 1.5 hours a day, you should probably change them weekly.
Do you feel warm within your cage?

I've used EB strings (beefy slinkies 11gauge mostly) for about 2 years now and I've never had the problems a lot of other people seem to have had, I play about 3 - 5 hours a day everyday and I gig frequently

if you like them, keep using them.

1.5 hours a day and you think they should be changed weekly? thats like changing your car tires every year, not neccessary if you keep them in good condition.

I use .11 gauge GHS Boomers. Lasted me for months now. Yes, I do not change my strings until one breaks.

My strings sound dull and flat after a week of play, as well as corroding and rusting and experiencing gunk and build up. I do generally between 1 and 3 hours daily.

If you've got any tips on extending that, please share them.

If I did that, I wouldn't have changed strings for over a year, and that's recently. I haven't broken a string since highschool.

I love Ernies. They are all I use. They make reinforced ones now to prevent breakage, but I've never had a problem with a good old set of regular slinkies. In response to the Elixer guy, I've used them, and they feel like they've been pre-played due to the coating on them. I don't like that, but if you can stand the grimey feeling, then they will last a long time. On the flip side, changing your strings about once a month will help preserve your tone and will allow for more consistent intonation.

well you are either using junk strings, or you play with dirty hands. I wash my hands before (and after) playing, and wipe my strings and fret board down quickly and I dont have any problems. I typically change mine every 4-6 weeks.

I've played on GHS, D'Addario, Ernie Ball, Fender, Gibson, Elixir (They do last longer, but not 5 weeks), and DR. None of them last me five weeks, and I wipe them down before I put my guitar back in the case.

The problem I have with Eb's is that my hands sweat like mad so I can have them black and tarnished after and hour - if it wasn't for that I probably wouldn't care.

I tried some rotosound pure nickels/vintage (blue packet) ones in 10 - had them on a couple of weeks and still no tarnish and they feel really nice

well there is no way your strings should be corroded and rusting after your first week of playing, thats just rediculous.

I dunno man, I put about 40-50 hours on mine before changing, and even then they aren't in bad shape when I change them, I just do it so I can clean my fret board

A lot of people play guitar more than 3 hours a day, should they change their strings after 3 days...?

Here's what I'd do if I were you:

I'd get the .11 gauge RPS Strings from Ernie Ball. They are the reinforced ones I mentioned earlier. I also have terribly sweaty hands, and recommend washing before you play, and wiping your strings down afterward with some Ernie Ball Wonder Wipes string cleaners. They are like 9.99 for a big box of them on musicians friend.

This process should help you maintain maximum life, tone, intonation, etc. out of your strings for a good month and 1/2 to two months.

yes, elixers... i love them. There is a feeling about them, its like a smooth feeling, great for sliding and stuff. They last forever and their sound under gain is excellent.
I like them better than d'addarios, some 6 doller brand i forgot, fender bullets, squier strings, and my friend has earnie balls, those are pretty good, but he breaks the e string of his guitar every week i come by for band practice, he also has a guitar with daddarios which didn't break yet.

But to each his own

edit:
I'm curently using d addarios, medium nickel bright wound?, and i've had them on for about 8 months. There are a lot of dents in them, but you cant feel any of the dents while playing
