Well, think about it this way: guitar strings are just thin nickel/steel wires, right? Why do strings of the same alloy and same guage cost different if they're made by different companies? The tuning forks might be made differently, or different alloys, in different coutries, where workers require/are granted different amounts of pay.

One might be hand-sculped and tuned in Germany, the other might be cast in communist China

yeah, the wear out and become deformed and whatnot (good ones can do this eventually as well, but it takes a lot longer)

I don't like tuning forks, I just use one of my harmonicas or an electronic tuner.
