Soon (christmasish, hopefully) I'm going to be starting my first from-scratch build, a flat top Les Paul style guitar.
Anyway, I know how to do most of it, but the question that I have is, how should I route the neck pocket so that it has the correct (1.5-3 degree) angle?
I'm going to be using this: http://www.guitarbuildingtemplates.com/1959LesPaulStandard.htm
I see it comes with shims for the pocket, but can I use those for routing? How?
Or are they just for refrence?

hopefully one of the builders will weigh in on this one. if not maybe PM Ormsby?
i'd have to guess it would be much easier to angle the neck heel than angle the pocket.

but if you have to angle the pocket,
probably an angled template that sits atop the body during the routing.
thicker on the end away from the pocket.

this is a tough question, not even SYK knows

I would say the neck heel would be the easiest too.

Ive been wondering this question for a while now, and i just cant figure it out. i thought of one way, with some makeshift jig, but i doubt it would work.

i've been thinking. If you find out the depth of each end of the pocket and route that (say the bridge end is 2" deep and the nut end is 2.3" deep) and then like make stairs/ levels and level it out with a chisel if you know what i mean?
Or route the neck pocket with the router on an angle from the end of the body?

lol. i really don't know all that much about guitars, other than electronics.
the rest i learned piecemeal along the way.

3 feet? thats 1 metre which is a massive angle. i think you made a mistake
i've got no idea what all the algebra stuff is though...

I didn't have a degree symbol in MSPaint, so I used an apostrophe

fo realz.

i know plenty about electronics and physics. and a good bit of the math associated with music theory. and i've done a reasonable number of repairs and setups. but i've never built a guitar from scratch.

What about shims? They're the easiest, but maybe not the most "durable".
definitely the easiest. and quickly changeable to get it just right. but the weak part of shims is they have 2 interfaces. body to shim and shim to neck. any voids reduces the coupling of neck to body. and lessens the sustain, slightly.

guys like Ormsby make pockets that have intimate contact between neck and body.
it doesn't get much better than that.

I've experimented with template shims but the best way that works for me is to angle the bottom of the neck heel and route the pocket level.
#25
for my last build i just wipped up some shims on a bandsaw using some scraps of hardwood left over and then using double sided tape just stuck them on and one piece at the back of the pocket so u dont route to far taht way adn then just go to town
im sure theres a better way but it worked fine for me

Thanks everybody
What I'll probably do (since I got a couple of answers, and they all seem like they'd work), is try each of them on scrap wood and see which one works best for me.
