What is the importance of a musician's appearance?
I'm not talking about pop music, where it's sold solely on "sexy sexy". I'm talking about real music, whether it's metal, hard-rock, punk, rap/hiphop, indie, etc. Would a skinny person be more likely to make it than a fat guy?

thoughts?

Anybody who plays better than the norm has a shot, regardless of their looks.

They just won't be signed by Disney, is all.

They need some talent.

Like Miley Cyrus, she has a decent voice, even if it doesn't sound different at all when compared to other pop singers.

regardless of the fact that they are picked primarily for their looks, you have to admit that there is some degree of talent, however small, in being someone like hannah montana or the jonas brothers.

if you play good, it shouldn't matter. look at bob dylan for christ's sake, he's the ugliest man ever to walk the earth, but he's still hugely popular.

so you're saying Britney spears isn't just riding on her looks, she is a serious musician with real talent that doesn't get publicity for shaving her head, but is famous and admired for her amazingly unique ability?

Bob Dylan was fucking hot, and still is for his age.

I'd fuck him.

Naming 1 or 2 fat musicians doesn't equate to /thread

If you can produce figures regarding weight, and then figures regarding the weight of musicians and show that they are very similar, then you can say /thread.

I'm sure that a much higher percentage of slim people are succesful musicans than with overweight people.

Edit: According to the American Obesity Association 30.5% of adults in America are obese, and 64.5% are overweight.

Now, unless I've been missing all the fat musicians, I am sure 30.5% of succesful American musicians are not obese. Likewise I am sure that 64.5% are not overweight.

I didn't say that. But regardless, yeah, pop musicians do need some musical ability.

Britney is not a good example, I don't think. She isn't so much a pop musician nowadays as a pop culture icon.

Well regardless of what you play, the way you appear has a factor.

But Pop music/Top 40 is much more critical on your appearance than the way you play.

Being attractive, thin and sexy in pop music helps a hell of a lot. There's too much evidence to note. I think appearance regarding music is important though. !

TS, are you worried because you're fat?

Being attractive only helps when you get really popular.

Looking good will help regardless of genre. People are more inclined to watch good-looking people than ugly people. That being said, talent is also important. For example Jack White is pale, looks malnourished, has a f*cking awful haircut and has a sleazy look in his eyes but he still does well because he's a good musician and songwriter.

Let's look things through the other side to get the answer.

Have you seen any ugly pop artist yet? No
Have you seen a fat pop artist yet? No
How many good-looking pop artists do you see? All of them are good-looking.

The answer is simple. Good looks is a must for the pop industry. (You don't need talent, anyone can make music when you got a producer who knows about music)

edit:

But if we are talking about music that's got nothing to do with pop:

Have you seen any ugly artist yet? Yes
Have you seen a fat pop artist yet? Yes
How many good-looking artists do you see? Many, but way less than pop artists.

Here the answer comes through the need for musical talent, and good looks only helps to get fame.
