So I have an geometry report due tomorrow, and it's about the Golden Ratio. I've worked all day and got most of it done. There's only one part I need to do. I must prove mathematically the exact value of the Golden ratio.

I have this link, http://library.thinkquest.org/27890/goldenRatio2p.html , but the only thing I don't understand is how to do the cross multiplying and the quadratic formula. I would really like to know how to get the answer to the quadratic step in the link. The steps to get what is said in the third step.

I hate homework help threads to, but I'm desperate. Any help is welcome!!

I usually wouldn't be in this situation and ask you guys, but many of you seem very knowledgeable.

All I need to do is prove it algebraically, no page number. I just need to do a 'paragraph proof' to prove it. Using **** like hence, therefore...Etc.

Substitute 1 for X

y*y=y^2

y*-1=-y

1*1=1

therefore 1=y^2-y

subtract 1 from each side, you get the quadratic equation 0=y^2-y-1

use the quadratic formula

the quadratic formula:

-b +/- sqrt. b^2 -4ac

so he's got

- -1 +/- sqrt. -1^2 - 4x1x-1

its difficult to type the quadratic formula. if you were to say it to someone, it would sound like this:

"minus B, plus OR minus the square root of B squared minus four A C divided by two A"

so, the bit where it says +/-, that means that theres two solutions, the positive and negative roots will give them both.
