Should I go for this (the Duncan Custom) or the SH-14 (the Custom 5)? I'm looking for a clearer tone.

I've been struggling with this question too. There are three choices actually. The Custom, The Custom Custom and The Custom 5.

I've been leaning towards to Custom 5 myself. I had descriptions of all of them from experienced users, but lost them. Each one has subtle differences.

Considering you have a valvestate my best advice is for you to get a new amp.

If you have to get new pickups, SDs are highly overrated in my opinion. Get a pair of rock monkey pickups. They're made by corduroyew here on UG.

So you're going to prefer generic pickups to boutique hand-wound ones? Many in GG&A will agree that rock monkeys are fine pickups.

However I still think a new amp is the best way to clear up tone.

Oh, you might want to edit your profile

Vypyrs are good but not the epitome of clear tone. At least give the pickups I suggested a look.

these are as a gift; My parents will kind of object to paying $260 for pickups. Oh, and Corduroy is a nice person, he stays in GB&C mostly though.

Ok, thanks for clarification. Well it seems based on the description that the Custom 5 is "more vintage" than the SH-5. So it's a question of the styles you play really.

I have an SH-5 in one of my guitars at the bridge. Lower resistance and bassier than a JB. It can still handle clean tones okay. But its not super hot. I like the eq of it though.

i had a tb-5 in my strat which is the trembucker version of the sh-5 and i really liked the tone i got with it. it was a really versatile pickup, i could do pretty much any genre on it, nice clean when split.
i used to be a mod, then i took an arrow in the knee.

Sounds good to me. Should I get a Jazz or a '59 to complement it do you think? I'm thinking 59, but I'm not sure.

59 neck

that is what i would go with

the custom is awesome

alright that's what I was gonna go for.
But seriously, what are the tonal differences between the Custom and the Distorion?

in a nutshel the distortion has more output.

but into more detail, the eq is different.

Distortion has more mids also.

If you'd like to know excatally into far more detail go to seymour duncans website.

Also they have sound samples so you can hear all of their pickups.

edit: they are both great but if you want a little more output, go with the distortion.
You'll love it.
