Alright, so I wasn't going to do this, because I'm already in the process of building a strat...but today I was at the great House of Guitars here in Rochester to be reimbursed for the amazing rip off that was somehow pulled on me when I bought my Jay Turser. Anyway, after exchanging the Jay Turser for something much, much better, a strat caught my eye. It was thrown in a case only filled with no-names and ****ty starters. However this one didn't have a logo on the headstock as the neck has been replaced at some point. The neck, by the way, is beautiful. Very nicely aged maple. Anyway the strat is black, scratched and dented up all over, and doesn't have working electronics. My buddy that works at the shop said he thinks it was a Hondo back in the day, which I would say is promising.

My camera is being stupid right now and I can't take pictures, but I'm sure you can imagine a black strat with a maple fretboard and yellowed white covers, knobs, and pickguard. Also it looks like someone hit this thing with a bat. The neck pickup is bashed into a huge crack in the pickguard. Oh well, it's all coming out.

..Eh so I wrote all that out and didn't post the thread cause I was waiting for pictures. But since then I took it apart, and it's plywood oh well, I'll deal with it. So in case you didn't guess this is going to become a David Gilmour copy. For those of you that don't know, it will look like this:

I need to buy:
-Black Pickguard
-For pickups I'm hoping to ask CorderoyEW to recreate the pickups in the sig model, which would be "# Neck pickup: Custom Shop Fat '50s Single-Coil Strat
# Middle pickup: Custom Shop '69 Single-Coil Strat
# Bridge pickup: Seymour Duncan SSL-5 Single-Coil Strat"
but for now I'll be fine with just some white strat single coils from GFS.
-A new trem. Old one is...well, it's destroyed.
-All new pots, input jack, all that.
-New tuners. Trust me, the old ones don't even turn.
-Switch to turn off neck pickup

I'll keep you all updated.

FUNDS:
Spent: $0(Yes, they threw the guitar in for free.)
Remaining to keep with competition: $149

tl;dr - I received a useless junker and am turning into a David Gilmour replica.

Good plan. I tried to do my own David Gilmour strat, but the body is plywood so it doesn't sound the best.

Are you going to do the short trem arm??

Crap. I just became aware that if I want to be accurate, I'm going to need to do a 7-Tone switch. Can someone post up some info on that?

Yeah I saw that, which is what piqued my interest and informed me that I indeed missed a very major detail in my plans!

I was just looking for a description on exactly how it affects the tone, maybe a diagram, etc.

I also have a refinishing question. Do I really have to take all the paint off down to bare wood if I'm painting a solid color? I think I have all the poly off of it, it's just a bitch getting it to bare wood. Help?

you don't have to take the paint off, just make sure you have some texture to have the new coats to mechanically adhere to. If you're down past the clear, sand it to 320 and you should be ready for paint

Thank you good sir. I've been using some 60 just to get the clear off..and ****. Now the finest I can find in the workshop is 220. Gay

220 should be okay as well, just make sure you have 400 for in between coats of primer and colour

Right. I plan on being very precise when refinishing to avoid a crappy paint job like so many of my friends have done.

Gilmour's black strat has a sunburst under that black
Then there's this band called Slice The Cake...

Bunch of faggots putting random riffs together and calling it "progressive" deathcore.
Stupid name.
Probably picked "for teh lulz"

Mod in UG's Official Gain Whores
#18
Yeah I know it does

Unfortunately I can't be bothered to do a sunburst first lol. Also I'm going for the N.O.S. version of the Fender Sig series, other than the relic.

Update: I just sprayed the first coat of primer. I'm sorry I still can't get this camera working guys...but I'm gonna try and steal my sisters camera when she gets home from work a little later. It's a shame you couldn't see what the guitar started looking like, it was sad.

Camera works!

Unfortunately it didn't work when the guitar was assembled and looking like ****..you all would have really laughed at the sad shape. Anyways.

Thankfully the original neck wasn't on this thing. Someone replaced it, probably a long time ago, because this neck is yellowed and beautiful. Heres the whole neck

And a view from the headstock..

Broken and ugly old pickguard

Priming of the body

I need to pick up some 320 grit tomorrow so I can keep going.

Minor update: I wandered off tonight and spent my first $20 of the project! I picked up some more primer, some flat black spray paint, some 320 grit, and some 600 grit for later wet sanding. Now I need to order some nitro lacquer and now I need suggestions on a brand. Links?

Hey, I'll take that pickgaurd off your hands for ya. I like relic'd out stuff and that actually looks pretty sweet.

I may hang on to the electronics, but I see no need for keeping the pickguard itself if you want that. I'll warn you it's broken right in a spot where there was a screw hole, and that chunk is gone.

Damn, does it really take that long? I only wanted to do so because that's what Fender put on the NOS model of the signature

Well I asked the luthier to whom I bought my project wood.

He showed me a guitar: It was damn nicely laquered, but he told me. Thats Nitro, Ive put it three weeks ago, still hasnt cured. Im never doing nitro again, Im using this guitar for exposition. The guitars I sell all are and will be laquered with polyurethane

Edit: I dont know why the unhappy smilie appeared there. ?¿?
