OK so my friend plays a Dean ML the cheap one, like $250 and he wants to put pickups in it, he doesn't wanna drill to put in actives so what are some good passives for metal and on a budget (like $150 at the most!) so help us out ug and thanks for the suggestions

New guitar would be better.
Would actually be a lot better for him, and it will have decent pickups in.

Pickups need decent wood to sound good, so don't buy pickups when the guitar isn't worth much more than the pickup

What's his current amp?

We can make decisions then.

Duncan? Dimebucker, or something like the Invader?

I'd recommend the Invader, but I will need to hide behind my flame shield before I do.
A lot of people say they're too muddy, but I don't really find that at all, I find both the cleans and high gain tones quite good through the Invader.

your gonna laugh he's playing through a 10 watt crate bass amp, but hes buying an Ibanez 30 watt toneblaster

SD JB/Jazz, Bill Laurence XL500's, Dimarzio Evo, Paf Joe, ect.

NOT THE DIMEBUCKER!
It's god-awful.

Edit for above:
New amp.

1) Pickups will do nothing for his tone AT ALL even with the new amp, tell him to get another christmas present.
2) Stay away from the Toneblaster too.

The amp is the most important part of any guitar rig, by having an inadequate one, the reat of your equipment is compromised.

In short....Don't buy new pickups for christmas, and don't buy any of those amps.
