my sister has an acoustic guitar, and wants an electric guitar as her birthday present. now, im not sure of what sort of thing to look for, as i havent been after a guitar in the <$1000 price range in maybe 2 years. i know that she likes strat and sg shapes, and im sure she wouldnt be hating a generic superstrat shape either.

so my question is, what is something fairly cheap, but still half decent? by fairly cheap i mean less than say, 800 dollars. she plays pop punk and some rock and metal. my suggestion was either a mexican strat or an epi G400. any better ideas? cheers

awesomedit: i AM NOT spending this much on my sister. i may chip in a little. this is my parents gift to her. but they know nothing about anything, so it comes down to me to try find her a guitar. hahaha

800 dollars? You like your sister a LOT more than I like my brother

Anyway, you can get lots of good guitars at that range, but it's going to be a bit tougher if you're buying it for her (aka she's not trying it out). G400 and Mexican Strat (make sure you go to teh store and pick up a good mexican strat) would be good, you might be able to find an american or highway one strat at that range too.

Do you know if she prefers thin or thicker necks? Or medium?

One of those Hannah Montana peices o' Sh*t....
But on a serious note, If she likes rock and metal etc., Esp/Ltd has an sg type guitar called the viper, and for strat types, they have the m or mh series or the Kirk Hammett sig guitar.

In before wangcaster minus the 'caster'

I'd say a Jackson DK2, or a Fender Fat Strat
ohai little sig.

Well, I would say a Les Paul if she likes Metal, but if she likes Strats, how bout just a squire? Does it really need to be around $800? I mean, I have an acoustic/electric, Ill probaby get an electric soon, and all i need is like a Les Paul Epiphone, which are generally a few hundred dollars less than $800. How long has she been playing, how serious is she, that would probably help decide?

I'd get one of the MIM Standard HSS strats; Sure the pickups could use work, but it's $400, leaving plenty of financial room for better pickups to be bought, and it has coil-tap on the bridge bucker' stock.

the fender '72 deluxe telecaster is an awesome guitar for almost every genre of music. i've played rock n roll, punk, even metal on this guitar. the humbuckers have a nice bit when you dig into it. if your sis likes punk n rock and all that then this guitar is good for that. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Classic-Series--72-Telecaster-Deluxe-Electric-Guitar-102551389-i1146696.gc

the fender fat strat is also a good pick. especially because of it's humbucker in the back, as well as two single coils. a good mix. the humbucker rocks on this thing. http://www.guitarcenter.com/Fender-Deluxe-Fat-Strat--HSS--Electric-Guitar--Black-510477-i1374014.gc

there's also a jaguar that is pretty sick looking and sounds pretty good too.

most of the mid priced guitars by fender are decent guitars to have. the deluxe players strat is also pretty nice.

I completley agree with the 72 telecaster. For something that's the same price, look at the 72 Tele Thinline. Same exact thing, but semi-hollow, and i can say that it's a really good guitar. It's ma baby
