What came out this year that you people have been "stoked on" so to speak? I can think of a bunch that really stood out:

Trap Them- Seizures in Barren Praise- Possibly one of the best things to happen to heavy music this year.

Coke Bust- **** Bar Culture- Several minutes of some of the best D.C. hardcore straight edge music to ever exist.

Mind Eraser- Conscious Unconscious- ****ing brutal.

Let Down- We're In This Alone- Sweet, sweet, 2nd wave youth crew aping.

Annihilation Time- III- Black Flag meets classic rock.

Hour of the Wolf/Lewd Act- Split- Hour of the Wolf is one of the best things to happen to music and Lewd Acts is fantastic.

Cursed- III- The other best thing to happen to heavy music this year.

Ceremony- Still Nothing Moves You- A natural progression for the band, jumps back and forth between sludgy and blisteringly fast.

Verse- Aggression- More or less just another Verse album. Like usual, solid music.

Underoath - Lost in the Sound of Separation

Amazing stuff.
Does being successful truly make you a sell out? Can't you do your own original music and be successful because of it?

What label was that on?

James Dean - Across the Great Divide (7")

Don't think I've bought anything really hardcore this year, closest thing would be the Who Calls So Loud album but I wasn't best impressed by that.

anyone else think that 2008 was mostly a bad year for bands who have already been around a while?

like, Have Heart, Verse, Cruel Hand, and Blacklisted all had pretty mediocre releases IMO, when their previous stuff ruled

on another note, bands that released great stuff

New Lows
Let Down
Trash Talk
Trap Them
Ceremony
Iron Age
Iron Lung
****ed Up
Suburban Smash
Paint It Black
Voetsek
Annihilation Time
Trapped Under Ice
Swamp Thing
Cursed

The new Blacklisted didn't hold my interest like their old releases. It had one song that I really liked, but I already had that song off the Deathwish sampler. Oh well. I have yet to hear new Iron Age yet, so I should probably get on that.

Also, I pulled this off the Deathwish Records facebook thing, this is apparently all their upcoming records:

Coming Soon:
DWI69 * Pulling Teeth & Irons Split 12"EP/Digital
DWI71 * Doomriders & Disfear Split 7"EP
DWI72 * Converge "Jane Doe" Deluxe Gatefold 2XLP (Licensed from EVR)
DWI76 * Integrity "The Blackest Curse" CD/LP/Digital
DWI77 * Narrows Full Length CD/LP/Digital
DWI80 * United Nations "Never Mind the Bombings, Here's Your Six Figures" 7"EP/Digital
DWI81 * End of a Year 7"EP/Digital
DWI82 * Pulling Teeth "Paranoid Delusions / Paradise Illusions" CD/LP/Digital
DWI83 * Internal Affairs "Evil Egyptians" 7"EP
DWI84 * Wear Your Wounds by J. Bannon CD/LP/Digital
DWI85 * Converge "Thousands Of Miles Between Us" DVD
DWI86 * Ressurection "I Am Not: The Discography" CD/Digital
DWI87 * Victims "Killer" CD/Digital (LP on Havok)
DWI88 * Supermachiner "Rust" Collection CD/Digital

2009 should be pretty sweet. Oh, also, I forgot about Ghostlimb- Bearing And Distance (http://www.myspace.com/ghostlimb). It's got members of Graf Orlock playing less grating tunes. Probably one of my favorites this year, I'm not sure how I overlooked it.

Underoath - Lost In The Sound of Separation

and

Trivium - Shogun

Are the only completely fantastic core albums I've listened to this year, and Shogun borders more on a hybrid of alternative metalcore/thrash metal

I don't know, but you can't deny that Prying Eyes is a really solid record. Tight as hell, great riffs, nothing bad about it. They're both equally awesome.

of course man, it is solid, heavy, riffs rule.

but it just seems to lack some of the energy that without a pulse has

Same, the best lyrics they've ever written.

it was just another verse record. Extremely similar to the previous two, they really didn't step outside of the box at all with the new one. It's not a bad record, but there were far better and more ground-breaking records that came out this year.

I understand that and I personally think it's their best. I just don't understand all the people who say they like old Verse but hate the new one.

On Verse, I was listen to Rebuild today and I like the songs better on the new one, but Rebuild has a better and "fuller" sound to it. I'll definitely give it more of a listen from now on.
