I was born in Tokyo of 1992 January to two ex-hippies.
My father is turning 62 next year and my mother is turning 54 next year.
They are too old to be a parent of a 16 year old, but I do have advantages.

They were born as rebels like many people of that generation.
They were the "I wanna die before I get I old" generation.

When they were in college, around 1965 for my father and 1971 for my mother, they listened to Hendrix, James Brown, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Janis Joplin, and others.
My mother told me she used to smoke joints because she used to date a U.S. Navy crew from a Naval base in Tokyo and he and his "comrades" smoked like pigs.
My father used to do a bit of Cocain and Marijuana during his art college days.

With my parents being total hippies and doing drugs, is this why I have sensitive allergy skin?
Never mind...

But it did have a good effect on me.
First, since I was a baby, the two rediculously liberal parents made me listen to the music they used to listen.
I grew up listening to drug-drenched albums, from Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band to Disraeli Gears.
When I was younger than 6, I listened to a lot of Michael Jackson, Kiss, 2Pac, Led Zeppelin, and Stevie Wonder because my parents made me.
One of the first films I watched was the Silence of the Lambs. No, I'm serious.
My father let me play Doom on my mac since forever.

Did it have a negative affect on me?
Well I don't curse that much, I don't shout to my parents, I believe in God all the time, and I don't drink, smoke, or do drugs.
I am the proof that mature media, from violent video games to loud music, doesn't affect how a child acts.

Anyone had any hippie parents?
How did they affect you? Was it positive?

My parents weren't hippies but they hardly gave me restrictions. I wish they did now. I'm an asshole.

Your upbringing sounds colourful

I wasn't aware it was possible to be a part time theist.

Oh, and "turning 62"? It's easier to just say he's 61.

Yeah, I believe in the evolution and some of the stuff written in the bible are rubbish, but I've always been a believer.

How do we know he isn't mid-transformation? We can't prove his Dad isn't a Pokemon.

You do know Christianity is evolutionary and that anyone who isn't an outright fundementalist knows that the early bible writers took historical facts and dribbled them in bull**** juice so alot of the Old Testament is not intended to be true, right?

But that's way off topic.

Yeah, my mom was (and still is) a pretty big head.

Gets annoying at times, but it's mostly fun.

Yep, and Bob Seger

It was REALLY easy to get into Rock because my dad had all the Led Zeppelin records, from the live versions to the studio ones, but he seems to love Hendrix than anyone else.

My mother was on the more Jazz Blues side, she had Jackson Brown, Janis Joplin, and Joni Mitchell.

In an attempt to be vaguely on topic, my mum likes Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, Guns N Roses, The Eagles, and all the other classic rock/hair metal legends. She also quite likes power metal. My dad likes The Beatles, and even complimented Metallica recently. They're cool.

My parents were hippies, but their lives made them tighten up a bit on me. Overall, I can't complain about my upbringing.

Dad wouldn't let me buy a Black Sabbath album (cause of the DEVIL!!!) But AC/DC was okay, so was Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow, Deep Purple, Zeppelin. He like Appetite For Destruction, and was a pretty cool guy.

But he wouldn't buy me an electric guitar for Xmas years ago.

He's gone now, I wish I could share my music with him today...

Same with me and my parents.

TS, I'd not say that the media and a child's surroundings have no effect on said child, but I also don't believe that we can be "programmed" by the media like some people *coughJackThompsoncough* say. We're genetically predispositioned to be reasonable and able to live with others. We're a social species.

Obviously, the kids at the Collombine didn't go on a killing spree becasue they played friggin Doom.

your parents rule! my parents only listened to some 80s pop and more classical music, so it was very hard for me to discover the whole rock'n'roll and later metal world, but i'm glad i'm on the right way now.

oh and btw. i played doom 2 when it came out, and i was like 5 years old xD

I had zero restrictions when i grew up.....

In a way i've grown up good cause they've shown me everything tht's bad, but then explained to me the bad effects of drinking, drugs, smoking and let it up to me....Luckily i made the right choices. My dad smokes and drinks and i'm totally allowed to, but i just don't want to.

The problem occurs when kids make the wrong choices, it's hit or miss ! And the media will pounce upon these cases....cause that's what makes news. The public wants scandals.....

My Dad was a rebel, though I wouldn't call him a hippie at all, he was never really into drugs, though he tried them, and apparently sold them. He's 52, so he graduated high school in 74. He told me stories how he never when to class when he was a senior. He instead managed a supermarket. Back then I guess attendance wasn't a big deal. He said he paid girls to do his work so he could graduate. After that he went on a road trip and did other crazy stuff. Wish I was alive then.

not at all, but I don't drink or smoke anyway

Yeah, he gave me three magazines: Japanese Playboy, and two other Japanese magazines.

I felt a little sick, but I have to admit that I used them...

My parents are pretty conservative, I was raised listening to disco and crappy 80's songs. Although my father likes AC/DC and Queen, but I grew out of those bands.

my dad smoked pot for a couple years, but both my parents are pretty against drugs now (my dad doesnt mind me experimenting with soft drugs though), they dont mind me drinking or staying out.

my friends parents used to grow their own weed when she was about 10. they're still hippies. they dont grow it anymore because the pigs kept raiding their house. but still smoke pot with most of their kids. her dad goes to a field he knows about, and usually gets about 600 shrooms every year. wont tell anyone where it is like, except his best friends and family. They used to take space cake on picnics

EDIT: i should say, that despite being raised in a hippy household, and smoking pot with her parents at 14, she, and all her siblings are very intelligent people. she's a straight A student and doing her A levels, she's going to uni next year to do art. all her siblings have all ready gone though college and none of them have gotten into trouble with the police. but 2 of them have stopped doing drugs because of paronoia (sp?)
