Alright so i had one of those genius moments, a new idea for a whammy. It's like a bigsby but can dive bomb! look at the drawings and tell me what you think. You see the gear on the tremolo arm gears it up so it spins the roller thingy thats got the strings on it faster than you move the arm, making the movements more exagerated.

its basically a bigsby kahler crossbreed.

it's over-complicated in my opinion, and redundant, but an interesting idea nonetheless.

switch the gears around too, the way they are in the picture, the movement of the whammy would be reduced on its way to the trem "roller"

think of it this way, the way it is, for every full spin of the little one, you'd get half a spin off of the big one = reduced

but if the big one was attached to the bar, a little movement would spin the little gear a lot more

edit, would also need something to stop or hold the bar in place when its in the resting position, because in the picture it would just be the height of the spring stopping the bar from moving up, and springs lengths change over time and use

I don't get it.

neither do i :/

oh wait... i get it now!

but hey man... wouldnt you need something to adjust the spring if you needed to?
like a screw into the body or whatever...

yo man who still actually gets a guitar with a whammy anymore?? I mean after watching this video http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2OONnAVIQ3I no one uses a whammy anymore man, you can whammy without a whammy bar lol - old tings on ug.

Anyway, it looks cool, I'd like to see a prototype of it!

it's a clever idea, and i agree with sandman you should apply for a patent on it and make a prototype.

Hahaaaaaah. I've never seen that <.<. Silly kid!

Well, uh....I'd put it on one of my guitars if it worked. No routing for floyd dive bombs? hell yes.

now how will you build it?

well by going exactly with the pictures it looks like it would have problems not letting the strings go flat.

a really cool idea though!

Let me see if I have this right. You have to gears. On one gear, the whammy bar is attached. On the other, the strings are attached. When you move the whammy bar, it moves the first gear, moving the second gear, moving the strings to whammy. So you could whammy both ways, adding tension to the string, or adding slack to the strings. You wouldn't need a big gaping hole drilled in your guitar like a Floyd rose for this to work. It could be placed on string thrus, or stop bars. Genius!
#18
build it! I'll buy it. the only problem i can see would be the spring wearing down over time. that and the tuning thing. maybe make it double locking?

EDIT: please call it a vibrato, or at least a tremolo. whammy makes it seem childish.

It seems like a pretty good idea. You should try and make a prototype and then get back to us on it.
#21
shooshoosky is right, you would need to change the gears around, but other wise well thought out
#25
yeah whammy is the digitech whammy pedal, tremolo is a pedal which is like a automatic killswitch and a vibrato is what you got on your guitar...
#28
sdtb? sounds interesting. why not the GearTrem Bridge?

1. The gears are bass-akwards.

2. String breakage and tuning stability are gonna be big issues.

3. Patents are expensive, but this is a very interesting idea. Patent it anyway.
#30
how would stability be an issue? the way i understand this, it's basicaly a bigsby with a set of gears to allow you to dive it down. i think it'll cost an assload to machine though. It'll look pretty freaking sweet on an SG or something pointy though. maybe get some open-gear tuners

very good point. maybe if he double-locked it like a Floyd, would that help?

How would he fine tune it though?

Six rotating segments on the cylinder?

Or, fine tuning adjustment at the nut?

There are some obvious design flaws, but if you work on it a little it would be epic.
Do you mind if I attempted to make a prototype, and maybe figure out away to stabilize it, then send you the plans?

Jim,we all know you're good at everything
why don't you attempt to figure out a way to stabilize tuning?

Ok o: maybe if you could get a desig to stabilize tuning, i could build a prototype for this guy, (and myself of course ) and send one of them to him ^_^

wait a sec, the plans you've drew up confuse me. how would the tremlo arm make the gear spin? O-o
