Hey guys, I've been looking at amps for a bit now and I've narrowed it down between a used Mesa Nomad 112 for $625 USD and a used 5150 for $500.
I play a lot of high gain stuff, lots of thrash and Killswitch Engage, but also switch to cleans mid song. Not much crunch though.
Which one of these amps is better for me?
I also like how the mesa has separate EQ's for each channel buy the 5150 doesn't.

I'd like to go for that too, I just haven't been able to find one anywhere.
There's no way I can afford one new.

Personally I'd go for the 5150 with an EQ pedal for the cleans, I swear by my 6505+ and much preferred it to a few Mesas I tried

yeah, that nomad's a pretty badass amp, but i like the 5150's, sounds like you're getting a little more bang for your buck, with a little more gain, but then again, i really like 5150's, so i'm a little biased... get the 5150

With an Od pedal, could the mesa get close to the 5150 tone?

^ It will sound good but not the same as a 5150. Whilst they're both American-voiced, they're quite different beasts.

For the best tingle, use Original Source mint. That shit feels amazing on your balls.

well a peavey 5150 is THE amp for hardcore, and i'd recommend it over most mesa's. of course, the 5150's clean is quite horrid, but its not that big of deal, especially with an EQ pedal to help, so i think you could get away with it.

Head and Cab for $130? You don't need a head and cabinet, you need a psychological examination.

^ the cleans are not as bad as one would expet.
expescially on the + or II models.
honestly, if you can EQ a quality amp based on your unique guitar, its actually quite useable.

The cleans are not as horrible as everyone seems to make them out. The problem is a lot of people are using the cleans dry. Throw some reverb or chorus and you'll get some good tones.

Go for the 5150

Have you considered a JCM900?

If all you had to go on was the forum you'd think a Decimator could cure noise caused by dodgey stage lighting and restock the ocean's population of sperm whales

JCM800 & a Tubescreamer/other OD if any JCM...

On elabouration.. it's just the voicing really, both are quite modern e.t.c but I stink the 5150 clinches it for me with the tight low end it has, although an OD can aid an amp greatly in that department.
You have to try them for yourself if possible imo.

Well I've tried the 5150 for a bit and love it.
It's just that that deal for the Mesa was extremely good and I would have needed to jump on it ASAP.
PS it was just sold recently, so I'll probably be going with the peavey.
