you had an amp with a master volume and cranked the preamp volume but kept the master low?

would that result in better or worse tones?

Worse. You would not be driving the power stage this way and the tone and where the amp comes alive is in a cranked tube powerstage.

Yeah, I always keep the preamp low and just drive the tubes for all they're worth.

Depends what you're looking for. Keeping the master high would give you power amp distortion, whereas having the preamp volume high would give you more preamp distortion.

Power amp distortion is useful for classic rock and such whereas preamp distortion is more useful for metal as it gives a tight, focused sound.
