Difference between a noise suppressor and noise gate?

so yer what is the pros and cons of each product, what do they do etc...

I play old skool thrash metal, then press a pedal for busting lead tones for neo classical stuff and what not

They are NOT the same thing.

A noise Gate blocks the entire signal until you start playing, and shuts off everything again when you stop. Better gates do this faster, and suck less tone.

A noise suppressor attempts to filter out the noise when you aren't playing, and when you are playing.

I have yet to find a noise gate worth purchasing, and the only suppressor I found that didn't suck tone was an ISP Decimator.

I have a Boss Mt-2 will a boss noise gate work well with it?

and it seems to me that a noise gate makes your playing cleaner/less sloppy
is that true?

OK. I stand corrected. And I see the other thread now. I'll shut up now and go away

I have a SmartGate btw.

Edit - I think it works when I'm playing when I'm not playing. I like it a lot. I have a clip demo'ing it a bit. 5.0 Pedal Demo Yo or something like that.

No, the boss NS-2 (which isn't even a gate) doesn't work well. I had it, sold it next day. Sucks tone.

Learning how to play the guitar will make your playing cleaner/less sloppy.

noise suppressors may suck a little tone at times, but if your sound is otherwise unlistenable due to noise then you better be willing to bite the bullet, face facts, and play with a suppressor. the boss ns-2 has worked really well for me.
