If I were to use a 100watt amp with a 120 watt amp would the speakers break up at all? The amp I'm looking at is 100 watts and I don't want my actual speakers to break up because I want that tight metal tone.

If by "clean" you mean "get a finger right up in there and do a good bit of spelunking" then i guess "at any given opportunity" is my answer.

What amp is it?
Tube amps will have a good breakup resulting in more gain
SS amps will sound like ****e
But I doubt you'll find a situation where you have to turn it to maximum, my 120w 6505+ halfstack rarely goes past 3 or 4, even live
ohai little sig.

Well in the future I'm planning on either getting a mesa dual rectifier or an Engl fireball. If its the Engl then I don't have to worry about it but I'm worried that the Mesa would break up at the speakers a little bit.

Edit: and yeah the highest i've ever gone on my 50 watt tube amp is a little more than 12 oclock

It will break up in a good way, you'll get a more distorted sound. You don't have to worry, you probably won't need to crank it that high much, if at all

He's talking about the speakers, whether or not he'll get speaker breakup using a 100 watt amp and a 120w cab.

The answer is yes you will get speaker break up and you need to be careful, I wouldn't crank a 100 watt amp through a 120 watt cab. Depending on the amp, some amps can put out around twice their rated wattage once you're cranking them up. I've blown a 50 watt Celestion speaker with a cranked 30 watt JTM45.

What kind of cab/speakers are you running?

speaker breakup sounds quite good. i'm assuming you're using some vintage 30s in the 2x12 in your sig? If you're getting something like a Recto, it sounds great with Vintage 30s, mix in with some speaker breakup will make for one awesome sound. what amp are you currently using the cab with (or planning to use it with if it's not finished yet)?

Yeah, well they are veteran 30s in my homemade cabinet.

Right now I'm using the speaker out on my 50 watt Randall RG50TC.
