So I started playing guitar for a year and then when the school year started I was signed up for a guitar class. The class is great, and it has made me a much better player. But the problem is I can't stop sounding like my teacher's playing. I listen to all kinds of rock, but whenever I try to do a solo for any kind of music my improvs always sound bluesy or like a classic rock solo like my teachers. Anyone else have the same problem? I'm happy with it, but I find it hard to do other styles like metal now.

not to break any hearts here, but here's a little formula for you.

blues+speed=standard metal

also, I'd like to state that this isn't all-inclusive. I know that, but you can definitely get away with it.

Maybe try to find other people to jam with, someone who likes another genre, get them to show you some stuff from their genre of choice?

I have the same problem, but I never had a teacher.

Everything I play comes out bluesy and Classic Rock-ish. I love playing Classic Rock solos but I'd like to be able to do other stuff.

I'm starting to get into some sad, melodic soloing though, so I might be cured.

Aye, fight and you may die. Run and you'll live. For at least a while. And dying many years warm in your beds, would you be willin to trade all the days from this day to that, to come back for one chance, just one chance to tell him that he can take your sound, but he'll never take your freedom!

learn a scale then improve using it.

create your own little riffs to improv with.

Stick with your teacher, learn as much as you can, go into the world a better person.

If you start with an idea of what you want to accomplish you have already tainted the whole learning

If hes teaching you then naturally youll pick up things he does. My teacher told me about certain things I do that I got from him but I wasnt even aware I was doing lol. But at the same time I developed my own sound. So I guess my advice is, when he teaches you somthing or your picking up on somthing hes doing, just try to put you own unique spin on it.
