So I was thinking today. All of the shredders that we idolise at the moment [John petrucci, satch, vai, malmsteen, gilbert etcetc] These guys are all from the 80's era.

So, UG. Who are the new guys on the block in terms of the shred / prog scene ? I personally haven't a clue would be interesting to see what you guys think.

Also it's a good chance to find out about some new artists
#3
I see, I have never heard of any of these guys! I'll have to check em out, what bands are they from ?

EDIT: I actually know all of them LMFAO just didn't know what bands they were from!
#5
Buckethead is considered newish right?
Oziel Zinho
Kiko Loureiro
Rusty Cooley
Matt Rach...maybe
Shaun Gibson
Paco Hernandez, go listen to Beautiful Metal Queen now!

That's all I can think of right now...

None of those guys are really fast, especially not compared to the old school guys and some of the other new guys. Like Govan, Cooley, Fareri et al.

Guthrie Govan (He's amazing)
Rusty Cooley
Francesco Fareri (I see potential in him)
Dave Martone (one of my favorites. Newest album=win)
Mattias Eklundh
Jeff Loomis (Zero Order Phase=great, more metal than most instrumental guitar stuff, which is nice)
Marco Sfogli
Shane Gibson

How on earth did I forget these guys?! Gibson particularly is great; crazy skills and the musical insanity to match.

Imo The best overal modern shredders are imo these

Mattias is EKlundh
Guthrie Govan
Michael Romeo (noone named him wtf? )
Rusty Cooley
Buckethead

You have alot more other good guitarists, but these have and are having a big impact on the guitar.

I think Opeth is the best progband atm, though I don't know if they are considered new. Their Mix of styles is quite fresh, and executed well. Also technical performance is quite good.

Symphony X is also a cool band. All very good musicians.

Not really, no, they've been going for a good while. They are awesome though, especially Watershed; it finally added what I always thought was missing...SHRED!

that's cause back in those days there were only a few guys...now even my grandma can rip it up like the big boys
the only new guys i've been impressed with (mostly in musical sense) are:
Michael Romeo
Mattias Ia Eklundh
Mohammed Suicmez

Depending on what you think of as new:

Ron Bumblefoot Thal (American)
Mattias IA Eklundh (Swedish)
Dave Martone (Canadian)
Nicolas Garcia (French)
Guthrie Govan (English)

... just off the top of my head.
These guys I expect will become fairly well known in the future.

Personally, I think Joel Hoekstra is incredible. Undefined is an utterly stunning album.
My name is Tom, feel free to use it.

Guthrie Govan is absolutely a new force to be reckoned with

he's all over youtube, so for anyone who is not familiar with him please do yourself a favor and check him out.

also I'm personally a fan of Elias Viljannen
he's the new guitar player for Sonata Arctica, but his solo albums are pretty incredible as well.

Seconded. One of the very few who almost match Guthrie imo.
He who joyfully marches to music in rank and file has already earned my contempt.
He has been given a large brain by mistake, since for him the spinal cord would fully suffice.

I think he's better in Armeggedon... Not a bad singer at all either.

yeh but even then, he still gets virtually no recognition

in total guitar a while ago there was this article on "the new shred" and it featured michael amott, alexi laiho and mark tremonti

i felt as far as shred goes, Chris deserved to be in it more than michael
im not saying michael isnt awesome, just chris is a bit more shreddy
aha

I highly doubt that. When you think about it, most of those players are almost 40 years old and have been playing professionally for almost/over 20 years. They're not new guys on the block and there's no reason why any of them (or most of the guys mentioned in this thread) would became very well known in the future.

If you want to find new talents, go to YouTube, MySpace etc. and when you filter all the crap, you might find a few gems.

Absolutely not; Tremonti is the fastest of that little group there and he tops out at 14.5nps. I am in no way saying I don't like tham, I think they're all fantastic players but calling them fast relative to the scale of the "new wave" of shredders is just not right. Anyway I'm not the only person who thinks that Michael Amott sucks complete ass compared to his brother Chris.

Just last night I found a guy called Marcello Zappatore and I must say I'm impressed, he's got some skills, can write a good tune, does nice arrangements of other people's tunes and obviously has a sense of humor regarding his music. Check him out:

No I was just saying your kidding because I thought you implied that they where all slow...

As for Michael and Chris I'll agree Chris is the better, but Michael attibuted more to the melodic death metal genre. Considering he was on one of the first melodic death album.

Oh no, not at all; they're fast by normal person standards but we're talking about people who are known in the shred forum...that's like owning a "pick of speed +20".

And we're not talking about teh methulz, it's SHREDZ!

In the case of Vai at least it depends what you mean by "surfaced"; he was transcribing for Zappa by 19 and playing by age 21 but Passion and Warfare wasn't released until 1990 (age 30).
