Well, here's the thing

The explorer is a standard model. Nothing special, nothing lacking. You're paying about $300 more for the looks than it's real value. They do have a neck that is different than the les Pauls, which IMO, makes up every bit of that $300.

The Les Paul studio is a lower end Les Paul. You're more likely to get a lemon with a studio than a standard unfortunately.

Are you by chance a Metallica fan...explorer....emg's...

You may want to see if you can find either model with factory installed EMGs. I know that the Zakk Wylde LP has them in, but that's about it. Or there's always an ESP, which, depending on the model, should have them. Switching pickups for EMGs is just annoying.

Well tbh. If you are putting EMG's in, it doesn't matter which one you get because EMG's sound the same in any guitar... I think the explorer... Just because it will look cool!

I vote for the Explorer and I don't think the stock pickups are that bad. My Gibson V has the same pickups in it. I have EMG's in my Epiphone Explorer and they're better though. When you install the EMG's do the 18v mod it really makes a difference. Mostly it gives you better cleans but it effects the distortion too. There is room for 2 9v batteries in the control cavity. I have some pics in my profile that show how I did it on my Explorer.

It's not that bad. I thought it was pretty easy to put them in my Explorer.

It's not hard, it just takes too long for me, what with pot replacements and battery packs as well.

I have both, and I love both. I do prefer the Explorer however, it's neck is amazing.
