I have hit my winter slump again, and will probably feel generally shitty until mid-March. I also have been looking for new music. So, I figured I would just ask The Pit for some sad, dark, brooding, or introspective tunes, since the last thing I want to listen to right now is happy music. It doesn't necessarily have to be in a minor key, though. Genre doesn't matter at all. I will take anything, really.

How do you feel about screaming/growling vocals? The Black Dahlia Murder has a lot of dark-sounding stuff, I would check out the song "Warborn" and see if that does it for you. Opeth also have a ton of dark-sounding music. Amon Amarth aren't really dark or gloomy but they have a sort of wintery feel to them, for some reason. I don't know, maybe it's just me.

Virgin Black is more ominous than anything.. and Dream Theater is just sad. But whatever.

Here's Om, its just a drummer and a bassist. The bassist sings much like Tibetan chanting, and much of the music tends to be rather haunting.

And this is Earth. Its extremely slow tempo, and tends to stubbly change time signature a lot. I actually use this to fall asleep. Very little, if any vocals. Its all just chill instrumentals.

I love screaming and growling as long as they're well-done. Opeth are one of my favorite bands, actually.

the jar of flies ep by alice in chains works very nicely for dark and brooding. Almost all acoustic, depressing fun.

+1. That's one of my favorite albums, and I'm not even a huge fan of Alice In Chains.

This band is your best friend right now.

I dig this. It's definitely dark and brooding. It's a lot different than the other black metal I've tried.

Anyone have something that's full of tension and release? I cite Miles Davis on just about any ballad he played as an example.

Control Denied. Don't know why I didn't think of them before. Darkest Hour, specifically the albums Undoing Ruin and Deliver Us. Also At the Gates, Dark Tranquillity, and Wintersun.

I pulled those out after glancing through Itunes, and apparently I've subconsciously decided that the Swedish melodic metal sound is what you're looking for. Let me know if that's not doing it for you.

Oh, and one last suggestion: Crowbar. The vocals are either hit or miss for most people, but they're one of the most depressing bands I've listened to.

Holy hell, I haven't seen you post in ages.

Go for some My Dying Bride, some Agalloch, virtually most Doom you can find.

edit: Also, I didn't bother mentioning AiC since someone mentioned them already but definitely check out Mad Season if you haven't heard anything by them yet.
