ok, so your in a big band (there is a bass player and pianist)

how would you specifically play a gmaj 9

Well, you'd take a G, and its major third, which is a B, maybe the fifth (a D), a major 7th (F#), and the 9th (an A).

And make it into a chord.

I would choose to do

If I was soloing? Play 2 4 6, sounds different buts its ****ing cool.
Save the root for the last note of the solo/piece.

That's got the dominant 7th (an F).

sorry, I wasn't sure how to interpret that bit. I'm not *actually* a jazz player at all. I've just started to delve into it.

Bass will have the root Worry about 3 7 9 cover add anything other part of the chord if it works well.
