should I be palm muting? because I figure I'm already pulling my fingers off the strings so that kills the sound
...this is the last line of my post

Read the sticky in advanced techniques in the musicians forum. The guy there kind of palm mutes the strings above what he's playing and drags it down as he goes.

I suggest you practice only 3 string sweeps on the G, B and E string. This will probably eliminate the habit of palm muting.
Make sure your picking hand picks the string precisely when your fret hand lands on the fret so it doesn't sound oogly moogly. I think the easiest sweep to start out on would be something like this.
E----------------------15-19-15-------
B-------------------17-----------17----
G----------------16-----------------16-
D----------------------------------------
A----------------------------------------
E----------------------------------------

Also don't actually pick the string. Actually sweep. almost like you're strumming the string.

u could mute the strings above the one ur playing if u want, but making ur fingers lift perfectly will probably benefit in the long run
