‘I just want to dream tonight’ she said
As she lay her head upon my chest

I let the night go

I imagined it swimming through
All the alleys, lanes and highways

Of places I didn’t know

The city followed my great love
And fell silent upon a giant pillow

I retired with the lights

That broke away and swam too deep
In oceans, rivers and tiny lakes

I covered my ears

I watched her chest move up and down
And counted beats on my wrist and then

I closed my eyes

I blocked out everything too see
Just when and how my own city
Would come in the morning to wake me.
