Have you guys been following this story?

Any thoughts?

Also, I really wanted to post these pics

Now, I have been in several demonstrations that ended in violence, thrown bottles, rampant police brutality, but I have never seen anything like this image.

That is some hardcore rioting. Anyone from Greece on this forum?
#2
Yeah. Must be a hell of a lot of resentment there for it to have escaleted this far and still be going this long.

That is really interesting.

I have heard that the bullet that killed the kid was ricochet though. The ballistic tests proved it.

Still, the cops were firing into a crowd of teenagers... Ricochet or hit, it's still wrong.

That is true.

"Warning shots" from a fire-arm seems unnecesary especially with kids around.

Although I don't really know what the situation was.

Because they were innocent people doing their job, regardless of their own political views and opinions on the matter?

And yes, this was up yesterday.

EDIT: Let em burn... figuratively speaking of course

You can be sure that the Police don't have political sympathies with the protestors. The police are there to defend the state from expressions of public dissatisfaction.

It seems (and this is said without a true understanding of the situation) that the innocent people doing their job overstepped their boundaries and many of the members of the police force and riot squads have been accused of brutality in the ensuing riots by independant observers and human rights groups.

The police exist to maintain a stable society, something which was put at risk when the area was illegally put under a different control. Presumably, the people voted in the current Government on a democratic basis, the settlers have committed a crime, the police are employed to maintain a safe status quo.

That is your view on it... Ask any left winger and they'll say that police is way to maintain state and oppression by monopolizing violence.

If you don't want your ass beat i recommend not firebombing the police.

No, does this make my political views void?

EDIT: To the "Hook, line, and sinker" comment, I apologise for having my own opinions not tainted by violent, extremist politics.

Also, it's your view that the police are a form of social oppression. As thus, I'd rather I wasn't attacked for my beliefs, TrickCindy.

I was just wondering. I'd like to hear the thoughts and comments of someone who has experienced the riots. It's the best way of understanding the situation...

How was the stability of the society but at risk by a small area becoming self-governing?

It is most likely comparable to Freetown Christiania in Denmark which did not become a problem UNTILL the government intervened.

I have experienced some rioting and police brutality but nothing along the lines of what has been happening in Greece over the last week.

Why does it have any relevance if he's living in Greece?

It has been my experience that violence from the protesting crowd normally comes following violence and brutality perpetrated by the police.

I have seen cops do some ****ed up **** without provocation from the crowd. Once attacked, a crowd can turn into a violent mob in a hurry.

"Any" left winger is a gross generalization. Only the nutcases or the anarchists usually think that.

It's tragic that the boy got killed but he wasn't 'innocent'.

Not really. The punk was going to throw a molotov. Ask any police officer and they would've done the same thing. Its self-defense.

I'm not attacking you, I'm putting my beliefs out there.

And my opinions aren't as violent or extremist as ordering Police to shoot unarmed protestors (Greece, Italy, Sweden)

He meant Socialist, a left-winger who isn't a Socialist is merely a liberal. Liberals are capitalists and the enemy of the working class.
